Thanks Chris

David,
Whos rifle is that you have photos of.? Do you know what the brass plate says? Steve and I have Each bought photos of a fella Named Frank Scott with a rifle that looks a lot like the one pictured and the closeups sure look a lot like Franks gun has the same plate on the cheek piece.

I hope David made notes of length and maybe across the flats at the muzzle
Sure looks like the same rifle to me.

Yep, Franklin Scott's Schutzen. There's a photo below. It now belongs to a guy named Bob Funk. He told me he had no interest in selling it. It would have been in my next book if there had been a next book. Just one of the many things that are going to be lost to posterity thanks to the greed of my publisher.

The barrel looked like 26". I didn't have a micrometer but it seems like the barrel looked thicker than normal. I have more photos if you guys want to see anything else specific about the rifle. David

These pics are interesting too. I wonder if this brass plate was there to protect the wood if a Palma rest was used.

I am hoping someone will remember the rifle shown here way back , memory says 32-40 it was shown for information or for sale and was pictured on a soft case.

I have been thinking about puting something like this together I have a 30" heavy octagon barrel that would make an interesting 38-55 rifle

It never pays to be in a hurry. That last pic is the brass plate on the bottom of the buttstock of Bob's 99K, not the Schutzen.
CTW, that sounds like an interesting project. David

Me. Scott took damn good care of his 99. Any idea of the dates on the photos?

I have an 1899CD schutzen in 32-40 with a 26" 1/2R - 1/2O that looks very much like the rifle pictured, except for three things;

1. Mine has different sights, a target-style front sight that is marked "Stevens" (if my memory serves me) and a vernier-style tang peep sight.
2. A palm rest that is attached via a machined brass mount that screws into the forearm hanger.
3. Mine doesn't have the raised cheek-piece or a brass plaque.

It seems like Scott's rifle would have had some sort of target front sight.

IIRC, it looks identical. The 250+/- pre-WW2 rifles are stored in a bank vault in NH and I only visit them to do a physical inventory and inspection every couple of years.

A photo record might be of value. That's something I keep telling myself I should do.

The one in the picture above has a 1907 date on the plaque. Jeff, what time frame is your rifle?

On the above rifle, is the check piece part of the butt or is it an attached piece of wood?

I like that gun from a novelty viewpoint, but I gotta wonder what they were thinking when they built a schutzen 99, if indeed it's a "schutzen" rifle and not someone's idea of a target rifle.

If so, I bet the old guy wouldn't have minded lugging a 99R with scope around the deer woods either! grin

IIRC, the palm rest is engraved "Schoyen" in script and I believe that Schoyen was a gunsmith in Denver, CO, who specialized in building Schuetzen rifles and accesories. I don't recall that the hanger is marked, as I've never taken it off the rifle, but it appears to be of the same age and quality as the palm rest. I have known that it was a special rifle all of my life, as it was one of only a half-dozen or so non-Winchester firearms that my Father kept in glass front cabinets in the library at the house I grew up in. While he was a primarily a pre-'64 Model 70 Winchester man, he was known to purchase all sorts of high grade and unusual firearms if the price was right.

I wonder if these special 99's were owned/built by guys who had a passion for Schuetzen target shooting and simply wanted hunting rifles that mimicked their target guns. Anything by Schoyen, Peterson, Pope, et al is something to be treasured.

It doesn't have a palm rest or hanger but I'm thinking the brass diamond around the forearm retaining screw was to protect the wood and give a more stable mount when a hanger was mounted. The mount on the hanger wouldn't sink into the brass like it would into the walnut. I am thinking the hanger would be mounted with a screw that replaced the forearm screw. I wonder if it could have been an award for competitive shooting and Scott only used it for hunting, not competitive shooting therefor the hunting sights. David

Whatever Mr. Scott used it for he certainly took good care of it. Unless he just posed with the 99 and the real meat gun was the and beat up old surplus 30-40 Krag that was kept in the trunk. I know I certainly would not be dragging a trophy piece like that into the woods.

Maybe he just hung it on the wall. That is very possible if it was a trophy from a shooting match. David

The ledger entry pretty much tells it all.
[Linked Image]
It's hard to read. At the far left in very small letters it says "P.G. Cheek piece,Check A2 Swiss Butt 30/30. At the far right is says Sergeait (?) Scott. it must be Sergeant Scott.
The serial # is 91.874. The shipping date on the ledger page says it was shipped 6/29/09 which is consistent with the serial #. I wonder what the 1907 on the plaque means? It has the dot in the serial #. We know this was dropped shortly after 90.000. It has the rounded rear bolt to frame contact area as would be expected on a post serial # 90.000 1899.

Interesting that all those special features delayed it being finished by 10 months, compared to other 1899's on the same page.
