Starting to seriously reload for Big Bull out of stater most likely in the Cedars/Junipers.
I have the following for 270 Wby - 140 ABs,150 NP, 130 ETs, 130 TTSX or 150 ABLR.
Have 140 ABs, 140 NPs, 120 ETs or 120 TTSXs for the 26 Nosler. I do have 300 Wby
or 35 Whelen but I can not seem to come close to driving a nail with those.
Thanks for any input !

I'd be just fine with the 270 shooting any of the bullets you list for elk. I have used the 140 AB and 150 Partition and they are pretty danged awesome from my experience.

Same goes for the 26 Nosler, any of those bullets listed will wreck a bull. The 140 AB's and Partitions both shoot incredible in my 264 Win Mag.

Draftmule,
No losers in that list, but seems to me that 270 Weatherby would be the cream of that crop. Either of the 130's mentioned would akin to shooting a laser death ray, but the "old guy" in me favors the 150 gr Partition.
Lots of buzz about RL26 under 150's in the standard 270 Win. Wonder if there is any magic in a RL26 + 270 Weatherby combo?

I appeciate your wisdom and tips !
This will help me get started.
I have had good results with V560
plus 140 ABs in Wby but want to
sling some 150s and i think I do
have some RL26 ! H869 is all I have
tried in 26 Nosler.

I used a .270 Weatherby a lot in the 80's. It was a very very impressive cartridge so I have a soft spot for it.

We also had an Aussie writer called Dick Eusson up in the Territory and he was always shooting clear through Buffalo with a .270 Weatherby by using 150 and 160gn Noslers, so an elk shouldn't be much of a challenge for it if you place your shot correctly.

I put together two 26 Noslers, one for me, one for my hunting bud. Shilen #2 SS Match barrels on a pair of shot out 7RM BDL's. I worked up loads, he likes 140 NPT's/NAB's, I like 120 TTSX, E-Tips. Both shoot very tight and flat.

I recently worked with his old, tired Ruger tanger 7RM, had a Shilen #2 in .270 Wby fitted. That gun shoots almost as flat, about as accurate as the 26's, pushing 130 gr. NAB's at half inch or less. All three guns are 26".

The Wby probably makes more sense for WT's and hogs; he likes them both. The Wby does almost what the Nos will do, using a lot less powder.

The .270 Wby took some of the glamor from the 26 Nos, at least in my mind.

Just saying.

Good stuff!
The 270 Wby is a sweet 26" SS match + built 700 action. I will be stoked if I can get anything 140ish out of the 26 Nosler to match the flat out hotline of the 270 Bee with 140 Accubonds but perhaps? I have been using the 270 Wby over my big guns but usually slam em in the wide open spaces. Different deal in the trees so being a bit anal with this. I am tempted also to try copper in these two but not sure if I am comfortable going down to 120 grain. Thanks!

You won't challenge a 26, using 140's in the .270 Wby; you can get close with 130's. And those up against the 26 with 140's.

130's, heads up, 26 rules.

140's, nose to nose, 26 wins.

For our local use, not much difference, 130's/140's. That was my point and why I sorta had a sinking spell after building the Bee, seeing how it performed.

Still a 26 Nosler fan, it's great round.

My bud is excited about using his Wby this Fall.

DF - how much difference in powder usage is there between the 270 Wby and 26 N
using similar bullets and optimum velocity? If you don't mind.

Jerry

ps - The 270 Wby has held my interest off/on for several yrs.

With 140's, you're looking at around 20 gr. powder difference, like 70 gr. vs. 90 gr., approximately 100 fps advantage, Nosler.

Now, 20 gr. powder difference may be a bit misleading as the Nos is using ultra slow Vulcan cannon powders like US-869, WC-872, whereas the Wby is using more conventional slow powders like 4831, 7828, Magnum, etc. I'm working with Vhitavuori n-570 in the Nosler. It's faster burning than the Vulcan powders, but double base, high energy, may be an interesting choice for the .270 Wby. Down side, it's terrible thru the Uniflow, stacks. I had to remove the drop tube, drop each charge in a scale pan and weigh.

My initial point was how close the Wby with 130's compared to the Nos with 140's regarding trajectory, etc. With our WT/hog hunting, not much difference in terminal performance between 130's and 140's at equivalent velocities.

Yes.
Partitions are terrific and reliable performers in the .270 Weatherby.

Thanks D F

I was only considering the DIFFERENCE in powder consumption between the two using OPTIMUM handloads.

Thank You

Jerry

Either round is fine, use what shoots best.

The 300 Roy would be my first choice, unless I really had no confidence in it for some reason. I've take quite a few big game animals with mine and it does the job with a bigger hole. Again, I have confidence in it and shoot it well, so it is my choice.

Any of these rounds will do the job.

J WALL and DF ~

Thanks for digging into it!

Currently loading the following:
270 Wby 70g Viht N560 140 AB est. 3250 mv
26 Nosler 85 US 869 140 AB est. 3150 mv

I am just a rookie reloader but am getting very good
results with vihtavuori powder.
DF can you share with us how many grains for 26 nosler
using the V N570 ?
I have not been able to locate Viht 20N29
listed in Nolser Data book.

You can push that Nos load harder. 140's will go 3,250 fps or so with enough 869. WC-872 is about a clone for 869, IMO and a lot cheaper. It's a vulcan pull down, Here's a link. Call Jeff, he knows his stuff. http://www.gibrass.com/

Here's another link to n-570 info with the Nos. https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/11978081

Vhitavuori powder is expensive, but really good stuff.

Best prices I've found have been from Powder Valley.

DF

Edited to add, Powder Valley has Vv 20N29, but in big jugs with a big price tag. I would like to try it, but not that bad...
BTW, you have the Wby at full run, Nos at a gallop... grin
I'd guess 10K psi more pressure in the Wby than the Nos.
