Gentlemen,
I've gotten to a point where more is just that... More. More gear that I have to move, wipe down, run a patch through, and generally keep an eye on when I should be making memories. We'll just say this is not an overnight feeling and yet I realize that I will likely regret one of them for certain when it is gone. All that being said I've owned them for better than 8 years and NOTHING has really moved me enough to send them to Mark... Read through, if you have the time, and give me your thoughts...

I have three Pre-64 Winchester Model 70s, all in .30-06', all 1950 to early 1953. One piece bolts. I have never had an intention to build anything other than a .30-06 Govt(primary) or maybe a 270 WCF(secondary). Perfect feed rails for such cases. All that aside...

1. Rifle one: 1950 Winchester .30-06', refinished stock(well done), and decelerator pad(also well done), scope mounting plugs never taken out of the receiver. Clean crisp cut rifling. Shoots well for irons. Least likely rifle to go.... Steel shows it's 67 plus years of age but has hardly been abused. Just a little wear... Has an Echol's Legend that has been mated with it since they both arrived and I suppose if they leave they will leave together. Camera is unforgiving...





2. Rifle two: 1952 Winchester .30-06'. Rifle was fitted with a Canjar Trigger, not single set, had the rear sight drifted out and a filler fitted and perfectly matched to the bluing, scope must have been mounted, however, I cannot find a mark on the receiver. That said as hard as these receivers are that is not surprising. What is important is that it was done professionally. The trigger shoe is a WIDE unit. I have soaked it in every type of penetrating agent known(Kroil, Brownell's BPE, Oil of Wintergreen, etc) to no avail... Even with a braced shoe it does not want to move and I am not taking a chance on scratching anything to drift it out. With that in mind I contacted pre-64win.com and had him find me a period correct, as in same year take off, and I had Mark Penrod(Thank you again Mark) sign off on the 100% condition via several ultra close-up photographs e-mailed to him. Hence, whatever is found under the trigger shoe, there is a COMPLETE Winchester Assembly that was taken off of a 1952 Standard Grade in 100% Condition to replace it should the end user not want to use the Canjar(my suspicision fwiw). Not cheap, however, I no longer have to worry about finding a part here and there and the "what ifs" on fitment... I have NEVER seen bluing in this condition. The only downside is that it would push some to put a rear sight, middle stock/barrel screw, and try to repair or find a replacement for the stock. This rifle has stock ding or two from "closet wear" as my best guess. Metal is excellent and pad is original. Rifle was not hunted. Rifle also has an Pre-64 Echols Legend that is matched to it...

3. Barrel Action: Just that. It was purchased strictly as a building block. It DOES have the best trigger of the group. Bottom metal, magazine, follower, and spring included... Shows wear from use, however, cannot make it fail to feed or function. Ideal One Piece Bolt just like the others. Could work something out on the Legend from above on this barreled action. Some may not want to restock the 52' though it is only a clean speciman and not a collector. Whatever the worth in that is...

4. THE Book for those with said affliction... NOT a First Printing and yet it lacks the gold rifle across the top. Spine has not even been cracked. Opened a dozen times to check a serial number. Largely in my way along with some others in the Winchester fold so to speak...;-).

In short I am tired of dealing with ALL of them and this is just the beginning, however, you have to start somewhere. I would be happy to hear a couple of you built something special based on one of them... I dunno. Open to input... Have come to admire Jim Borden's Receivers, Sunny Hill Bottom Metal, and Bix Triggers. Still like the stock form in D'Arcy's Shrike. Dunno as I'll get back around to Pre-64s anytime soon. Have grown more than a little fond of the Penrod-Tucker Classic. Have a NIB early New Haven Classic in .375 H&H that will go to Mark likely next winter... May go to Tuck after that and then I suspect I will be out of the Winchester business. At any rate I thought I would put them here first for what that is worth.

Quality over quantity.

A couple of Penrods in Echols stocks and just spend time and money hunting...yep.

Of all the 700 clones out there, Echols selected a Borden for his daughters .260rem
