Finally made it back to one of our favorite fishing spots last week and kids had a lot of fun catching & releasing trout. (For those not familiar with it, Dry Run Creek is near Mountain Home, AR and is for youth anglers under 16 years of age and is catch & release only. (single barbless hook) Grace's biggest was a 20.5" rainbow with a 13.5" girth while Layne fought and landed a 23" brown that had a 14.5" girth. Not many browns in the stream right now, but quite a few rainbows and some nice cutthroat trout, too. Already planning a trip back down in November when there should be more big browns up in the stream. Honestly, though, it really doesn't matter...these were really nice fish and the kids had a blast catching them!

Sounds like everyone involved had a great time. Well done.

Yep! It's one of the rods that has been put to use on this stream. We are making plans to take a group of JH/HS students down in November, so I have been picking up more fly fishing gear to have plenty to share with kids that don't have any. Can't wait to go back to help a few young anglers catch their first trout on a fly. Thanks again!

It is a 450 mile/7 hour trip (each way) for us to get there, but it is worth the trip. Definitely a special place and a fishing trip kids will always remember!

My wife gets all of the credit for the pictures. She is very good at capturing the moment and saving the memories to enjoy another day.

Nothing like some "read about success " to get ones kids seriously hooked (pun intended).

Great environment and great pics.

Once got a young Boy Scout hooked into a yard long steelhead with a 20 minute battle before landing. Never prayed so hard for anything in my life as I did for that fish to stay hooked up. Turned him into a rabid fly fisherman.

Thanks. Layne's brown trout wasn't as big as the steelhead your young Boy Scout caught, but he had the same 20 minute battle and I had several of those hold your breath moments as the fish ran both upstream and downstream a couple of times. I'm sure the smiles were just as big when that steelhead was finally in the net! smile

I've had many great days with the kids on DRC. If you ever are there when they are cleaning in the hatchery, throw a streamer into the dirty water. My son did that as he got older and caught some whoppers.

a12 - Thanks for sharing the video...love seeing those big browns! What tippet weight do you normally use with the streamers? We are anxious to get back down there in November.
