My son and I sure are excited about our upcoming bear hunt here in Washington! Season opens August 1st.

Last year I tried a predator call for bear for the first time, and brought one in to about 15 or 20 yards. Didn't take it, because I wanted a bigger bear (and got a bigger bear about two weeks later).

Going to give that a try again! This is really for my adult son. He's taken a couple of bears, but he's excited about going after another. This year, anticipating a short range encounter on the ground, he wants to use my .30-30 Glenfield with the little 2.5x compact scope & 170 gr soft point ammo. Cool! That's a fun little rifle.

We'll let ya know how it works out. Bear sausage is good stuff.

That's a handsome Black bear. Hope your son scores on one like that.

Good luck.

I'm guessing he was 20 - 25 yards away. He was enjoying the fresh green grass! Did NOT call this one in, just came across him.

I hope for success too - that was really cool, bringing the bear in last year with the predator call! Good stuff!

Will do. And thanks for the best wishes!

His first bear, 2010:

And the next one, a few years later. Frankly, I don't remember which year!

He likes that old 30-06 Model of 1917 with the 6x Leupold & handloaded 165 Nosler Partitions.

Hoping he takes his third bear this season!

Good luck to you and your son. I will be hunting SE Idaho for mule deer in October. Seeing a bear is kind of a crap shoot that time of year but I definitely don't want to have to burn my deer tag if I see a good bear so I'll have a bear tag in my pocket.

I hunted bear is the Blue Mountains of SE WA for many years when I lived in Walla Walla. Those were good times. Looks like your son has taken a couple great bears. Good luck this fall.

Some nice bears in those pictures. I wouldn't pass on any of them.

Great posts and pics, Guy. I'm headed out to the Olympic Peninsula next month for a BB hunt starting about Aug. 1st. Will be spot and stalk, type.
