I bought some used brass which was supposed to all be 243. I found this case in the bag. It has 243 head stamp, and has been fired. Here it is in the center of photo. 243 on left, mystery case center, and 6 SLR on right. The shoulder is actually moved forward of the standard 243. Any idea what it is? Sure looks like an improvement on the .243. I would put it past old P.O. Ackley to come up with that one.

I know some guys were short chambering a 6mm Rem reamer and using 243 brass, but I don't think the neck is long enough for that.

Shoulder doesn't look steep enough for an Ackley. Maybe a Mashburn ... or Gibbs?

Shoulder isn't the standard 40 degrees that is usually associated with Ackley. I think RCBS made their own version with a 35 degree?

The standard RCBS improved shoulder was 28 degrees.

In the 60's there were a bunch of 6 mm wildcats. Warren Page and Fred Huntington "fathered" many. Fred's favorite was on a Robert's case. Page's was on a 308 case. Look like a 240 PSP (Page Super Pooper).
Look at Ken Howell's book.

Look at Ken Howell's book. The pooper or the Huntington version. But there are so many dasher, prancer and blitzen versions no telling which it actually is.

I've often wondered how many sleepless nights Warren spent coming up with the absolutely stupidest name he could come up with for the cartridge. It would be interesting to see the list of the ones that he rejected before settling on it.

Well in the 50's and 60's shooters were much more, well, fun. Most were survivors of WW2 so they didn't take themselves too seriously. They rarely criticized and ridiculed the creations of others. Huntington's 243 cartridges had names like "Rockchucker" and "Super Rockchucker". There were 257 Saturn's and lots more creations.
I have handled the 240 PSP which Page used to shoot a train load of stags in NZ back before it occurred to anyone to go and hunt there.
Really handy little rifle.
His PSP would be pretty darned "modern" by today's standards.

... Ok who suggested the name RCBS? RinB- It's not clear whether you're repeating my question, or asking for the answer. At any rate, Grover Wotkyns suggested the name "Rock Chuck Bullet Swage". This occurred about 1946. Wotkyns and Huntington interacted extensively at that time. --Bob
