My son will turn 10 next May and is chomping at the bit to chase bears with dad, so I wanted to put together a really nice first rifle for him that he could have for a lifetime if he wishes. Phase two is now complete and I am ready to send parts off to Karl Kampfeld to finish everything up.
Rem 700 SA - Chambered for 6.5 creedmoor Bolt has been spiral fluted Shilen #2 finished at 23" and fluted Timney Trigger B&C Mountain Stock
"Phase 2" had the barrel fitted, chambered, and fluted. I am sending all the parts to Karl for final work to include: Install side bolt stop Install Knurled Campfire Knob Install Trigger and set at 2.5# Bed action to stock and cut LOP down to 13" Cerakote Barreled action Graphite Black
Should be a slick little rifle. I have a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 sitting in the safe for it. The 4" of eye relief should be great for a young shooter.
I'm doing the same for my 9 yo son but 30-06 on a 721 action with a mountain barrel.
I had Karl flute the bolt and install a campfire knob. He did excellent work, just be aware that the campfire knob is large, significantly larger than i could tell from the pictures. I like it but it sticks out a bit, can get a good grip though!
I will probably have him retrofit an extractor at some time if the original ever fails and maybe the side bolt release as well.
Sounds like a great project and hopefully your son will have great memories of it and hold onto it!
