How did this happen? The answer is obvious, to me at least.

It starts with a breakdown of the family unit. Stats say that today nearly half of the families in America are "dadless" and have no spiritual leader in the household. Our schools have done everything possible to take God out of them as well. Our own country murders millions of innocent and defenseless babies every year, and nobody seems to care, all the while we complain and pledge violence against ISIS........how ironic. When you have a generation or two of this type of behavior, having become more Godless, it becomes your culture Sadly, this is our culture today.

It started when women were given the vote.

We need to return to our roots, the Judeochristian culture that got us here.

The alternative is too terrible to conceive.

But, will we? What's it gonna take to get this country back on the straight and narrow?

DF, we all know it will never return to what it was. Too much demographics against that. About all we can do is to prolong the fight and hope some are converted along the way. All of what JG Raider said is dead center.

They need to abolish God so that man worships the State. Once they get rid of God, all human rights are issued by the State, they aren't predefined or self evident.

The root cause is when we kicked God out of our lives.

Was thinking about this the other day and came up with some thoughts on the subject. From the very beginning, government began to concentrate power unto itself but for the first 150 years it was not overly intrusive. My parents were born in the 1920's and I think their generation enjoyed the best that America had to offer. Automobiles, electricity, flush toilets, strong family values, trust in God, home ownership and the promise if they worked hard they would be rewarded. About midway through their generation the entire nation united against a common enemy and all made sacrifices to win the war. They endured rationing and personal sacrifice. Many of them made the ultimate sacrifice. After the war they started their own families and wanted to give their kids (my generation) the things they never had.
The ultimate decline of the United States started in the 1960's. For some reason 1967 sticks in my mind. The idea of personal gratification, free sex, drugs, Woodstock and the mentality anything you want to do is okay. Hippies, Beatnicks, Pachucos were all part of this movement. Since then the schools have served as institutions of indoctrination, not institutions of education, starting in the colleges and universities and gradually spreading to the high schools, grammar schools and even pre-schools. Head Start was created to start indoctrinating children at a very young age. Political correctness, homosexualism, transexulism and all the other things that are destroying our country have arisen from this movement.
I don't think we can reverse the destruction of our once great nation. The election of President Trump will help delay the process, but ultimately our nation will succumb to liberal ideology and will destroy itself from within. The best we can hope for is to delay the complete destruction as long as possible by re-electing President Trump and praying for his lasting influence on our government.

Everything else mentioned here and most places are just the eruptions of the underlying disease. As I mentioned above, HERE is the root cause -- leaving our corporate (mostly a whole nation's way of living) Judea-Christian foundation. The feckless Obama -- just a symptom of the thinking and the values or lack thereof of those who voted for him -- was just being himself, a corrupt, elitist, racist, Marxist.

Look at western Europe's trajectory. In their multicultural (really meaning for the peasants that no culture is superior and none is inherently inferior) postmodern thinking they can't even recognize the evil ideology that is strangling them for what it is.

I pretty much agree with this view and am no longer optimistic either. This country has rejected the Giver of gifts.

There are lots of answers to your question of "how" - many offered above. Some of the strategies/tactics have been devious and deep-seated, and some have been coincidental.

The more important question (at least to me) is "why". It simply seems to be a natural behavior in the range and scope of humanity. I can't identify a circumstance throughout history where a "people" managed to form a significantly good and dedicated social/gov structure yet had the wisdom, strength and courage to preserve it ongoing.

Among many good things, we have been weak.
