Ok, I'm gathering for a 25-284 build. It will be a CRF action, but which one? I may use a pre 64 but I was thinking that a new short action may be a good one too. I like the idea of a short action but....if I use a short action can anyone tell me the max length of the mag box? I thought if I removed the spacer in the SA then it should be perfect for the 25-284. im planning on 100gr tsx's for the rifle so the oal should be fairly short. Pre-64 would be cool and was my original intent but why not go 25-06 if I do that. The SA has the most appeal to me if the mag box will handle it.
Also I can't see that wyatts makes and extended Box for the SA....I see a LA Box from them. Does anyone know if they make a SA?
So which action would you use?

The 284 case length is 2.17"/55mm long, so I'd suggest starting there and figure the COAL with the longest bullet that you plan to use. All of my 25-284s are short actions, but the longest/heaviest bullet that I use is the 110 grain AB.
My 25-284s have all been built on Remington 700 SAs, Remington 722s, and Savage 99C/CD action.
If you go with a long action, I can't think of a good reason not to go with the 25-06 in lieu of the 25-284.

Thank you. I don't plan on using anything over the 110 and probably stick with the sub 90 gr ttsx and 100ysx. Anything heavier I'll jump to the 257wby. I have some dies and brass Ill make up a couple dummy rounds. Moreover I guess I'm wondering what the sa Winchester mag box length. I read that you can remove the spacer and get something like 3.100" can anyone confirm this?

Iclimb, May I suggest you send a PM to "redneck" here on the campfire. He is an excellent gunsmith and built a .284 for my son in a Winchester short action. He tuned it and it chambers like butter. Shoots 140gr bullets of various mfgrs. Tell him what you want to build and ask him the questions. Winchester box and bolt throw works fine. His work on Winchesters is outstanding.

So which action would you use? NH Classic or PF. NO, NO, NO to any Wyatts boxes... The BACOs are ok, but the NH has a mucho better trigger when tuned.. Don't even think of a Pre-64 for that particular round.. FWIW..

Thanks redneck!
My plan is to trade a pre-64 for a new Short action 70 fwt CRF, scalp the action and put it in a Micky while I have my stock blank cut. I have a piece of walnut been waiting for the last ten or twelve years. I'll get a spring kit for the trigger or add a timney if need be.

...if I use a short action can anyone tell me the max length of the mag box?.. I thought if I removed the spacer in the SA then it should be perfect for the 25-284. IIRC approx. 2.9" if you are going to start screwing around with mods to get more length than that, you may as well just spend your money on getting the pre64 altered for the .284

I am feeling swirling gaseous colloids destined for sphincter.

I am not sure exactly, at the extreme maybe a new box and some modification of the feed rails. I havent heard any good reasons given why it can't be done, best to speak to some smiths that really know their M70s. I have seen pre64s from 22 hornet to 375 Ruger,.404j and .416 Rigby, The .284w case doesnt seem to be an impossible task. If it is, best if someone explain why it is so.

Using a LA to base a SA cartridge on defeats a whole bunch of advantages of the SA cartridge. There are no SA pre64s.

If I was to use a pre '64 I would have just went 25-06 AI. I found a new Winchester CRF in 22-250 on gunbroker for $600 shipped so I picked it up. I dig 22-250's so it's going to be hard to do but this will be the donor action. Like many others I wish Winchester would use the old trigger on these new crf's but in the end and like Sitka said---I couldn't overcome my desire to use a short action. If the 250 shoots I'll have to find another or maybe a Dakota action will fall into my lap...I wouldn't mind using a kimber action either but I like the bolt handle on the 70 better. Anyways I have a walnut blank that's been curing and is going out to be cut. I'll post some pictures when I get everything together. Thanks for the help all, that's why I love this place!
