Just Wondering. Has anyone pulled the SST bullets from factory loaded 338 RCM ammo and reused the powder? If so, how did it work out. This cartridge has been out around 10 years now. I figure someone, somewhere has pulled a bullet and replaced it with something else. How did it work?
Note to the Safety Police. I realize this is a compressed load and it's not safe to go dicking around in the dark, on your own with a powder you know nothing about.
Just asking.

You have zero idea what that powder is, its burning characteristics, etc, etc....It is a good bet its not a canister powder anyway, what you could buy at a store. Mystery powders are not intended to take a scientific wild ass guess with in regards to possible loads.

You have zero idea what that powder is, its burning characteristics, etc, etc....It is a good bet its not a canister powder anyway, what you could buy at a store. Mystery powders are not intended to take a scientific wild ass guess with in regards to possible loads.

I probably hit more elk with a pickup than you have with a rifle. I have yet to see anyone claim Leupold has never had to fix an optic. I know I have sent a few back. 2 MK 6s, a VX-6, and 3 VX-111s.

The ONLY thing I'd do is re-seat a cheaper bullet of the same weight and shoot that. You have ZERO idea what the powder is (already) and whether or not it is at or over max for your rifle.
Have I ever done this? Yes, swapping Barnes-X out for TSX's. Or, pulling premium bullets and seating Sierra's, Hornady's etc. instead. I have never used mystery powder as you have proposed.
Try to duplicate the ballistics yourself using safe handloading practices, by actually shooting the factory rounds against what you come up with. (This is likely not what you wanted to know.)

That's is the only thing I would do also and really the kind of experience I was hoping someone had. I'm not looking to blaze this trail but I might be a follower under the right circumstances.
