Just got back from the range to sight in a new mini 30. I have added a Trijicon RMR 1 moa red dot sight and a Flaming Pig muzzle suppressor. The RMR was mounted using the 3" Ruger factory rail that came with the rifle. I had previously sighted in the iron sights at 50m and 100m. With the irons I was shooting 2.5" groups with the Winchester sp ammo at 100m. The muzzle blast was stout and I would be reluctant to shoot the rifle in a car or house. After adding the Flaming Pig all the blast is directed away from the shooter and it was noticeably quieter. With the Trijicon RMR the rifle was much easier to get a sight picture than with the irons and the group size showed it. After sight in the 3 shot groups were 1.75" to 1.5" with the same Winchester soft point ammunition. Target acquisition was very quick. I still need to do a trigger job and change out the firing pin spring to make it reliable with steel case ammunition but so far the rifle has exceeded expectations. I shot through 30 rounds today fairly steady and could detect no zero shift due to barrel heat. The new thicker barrel must be helping.

There is video out there, it's been a long time. But anyway I think the guy smoothed up the bolt face? That cured his ignition problems.

I think it is a longer firing pin that cures the steel case ignition problems.

K1500 from everything the folks at Accuracy Systems have told me you are correct, the longer firing pin and a stiffer spring are the answer to surplus ammunition.

Does the stiffer spring and longer firing pin also work properly with US commercial ammunition?

Do you expect the muzzle blast indoors would exceed that experienced with a 5.56 M4 or an 18" barrel shotgun loaded with buck?

Were you using 10 round or factory 20 round magazines? Any issues?

Thanks in advance.

2.5 inch groups from a mini 14 at 100 meters with mini iron sights! I would have to see it to believe it. Try a 10 shot group instead of a 3 shot group.

Have you shot the Mini's since they changed the barrel profile?

Both of my brothers have new mini's. I was at the range with them the first time they sighted them in and watched them both punch 1.5" groups at 100 yards repeatedly with factory loads.

an iron sighted rifle with a big heavy op rod shooting average WW ammo into 1.5 inches? Maybe a fluke 3 shot group once in a while. We sit here with DI NF scoped rifles with good triggers shooting fed gold medal match from $500 barrels and we find out we have been doing it all wrong! Shoot a 10 shot group with it, but first I doubt anything smaller than 3-4 inches will be found at the very best.

I shoot just fine. Take your mini tactical and shoot the challenge. I did twice and turned in respectable results. Tell you what over the next couple of weeks I will shoot it again, smallest 10 shot group at 100 yards from the bags is the challenge. Let's shoot that iron sighted tactical Mini-14 against my 18 inch Noveske barreled rifle. Tell you what I will rescope my pencil barreled chrome lined DD and shoot that just to be fair.

I never said they were tactical or iron sighted. Both are standard, wood stocked mini-14's and both are scoped. Neither of them belongs to me. Still, if you can't shoot better than 3-4" with irons on an accurate rifle you just plain aren't very good with irons.. I could regularly shoot 1" groups at 100 with irons when I was younger and can still do 2" with my crappy old guy vision. Course I did win a few state championships in 4 position smallbore competition with aperture sights back in my day and have always been pretty damned competent with irons compared to most. I suppose it helps that I still shoot and hunt with iron sights regularly and most folks don't today.

Hoping that one day someone will step up and shoot the challenge with the "new" mini 14 with what ever optic they want. When I hear of 1.5 inch 3 shot groups from a Mini and a red dot or a mini and iron sights with "average" ammo I call bullshit on it. Does anyone have the information to re-post why we shoot 10 shot groups?

I respect everyone's opinions here, but ph uck the 10 shot groups out of a Mini 14. What's that going to prove, that it will heat up and open the group up? That AR's owners can say "see I told you so...." Big deal. I am more interested in my weapon getting into action fast and being reliable every shot. Minute of bad guy from point blank to 200-250 yards is good enough for me.

No one is disputing the Mini14 as a get into action fast rifle, the argument was based on the claim that a mini is capable of 1.5 MOA groups, with iron sights and WW powerpoints. Lets do this. Shoot 5 3 shot groups at the same target with your best ammunition (at 100 meters), wait 10 minutes between groups so the barrel is cool,. and post it up. All "flyers" must be counted.
