Purchased new from Bud's and just picked up at my dealer. I have one of the originals in stainless made by the old Marlin in 2004. This one is blued and I picked it up because they are offering a $100 rebate and I was curious about the quality compared to my other one as I've read a lot about quality problems. Other than the QR code (I have no idea why they would do that) and serial number engraved into the left side of the receiver there's not much I don't like. Bluing is deep and dark, fit and finish is excellent except for a tiny gap at the back of the top tang where it fits into the stock, and the action is smooth and tight. I haven't shot it yet but did load it with a full magazine of dummy rounds and it feeds and ejects perfectly. According to Marlin's website they have retained the cut rifling which is good. Overall the gun feels solid and well put together. I know Remington had some problems when they first started making these but so far out of the box it looks pretty good. After rebate I'm into it for only $380 which is a couple of hundred less than I paid for my 1895GS 12 years ago.

Hopefully you will enjoy trouble free operation. Gotta love the Guide gun!

Just shot the 45-70 350 gr with 55 gr IMR3031. Shot to point of aim 75 yd's. Am pretty happy with it. I'll have to have a couple of holes drilled on left side for an old steel Lyman aperture sight though.

Unless you a set on a Lyman, a Williams FP will bolt on the rear scope mount holes.

There's no holes. I have a couple of Kyman sights for 336's. I believe they'll work fine. A Skinner sight would work too without drilling.

Mine isn't the guide rifle it has about an 18" barrel and straight grip stock.
Short, handy, nice looking, shooting dandelion heads off-hand at 75 yards. Should work well a four legged creatures of all types.

If one is going to hop the unit up at all, that gap might be given some additional relief to reduce ones chances of splitting the stock.

I have no need for one but at $380 it's tempting.

Skinner would also be a good choice.

OK on already having a Lyman. I didn't know if you had one or were particularly partial to them.

Unfortunately, it has issues. Here's what I submitted on Marlin's website for the work order.

Quote
Brand new rifle, never fired. Action seizes up when lever is cycled. Seizes up intermittently when held upright and 100% of the time when held upside down. Please correct this.

Had a 444-P many years ago........action locked up....

pulled the butt stock off....one of the stock tabs had broken off....

locked up the action....easy fix.......Marlin then even replaced the stock !

That was back in '00 when Marlin was Marlin and they gave a rats azz......

Marlins are simple to pull down & clean & polish innards......

Funny. That is the only blem on my 1895 SBL, also.

I believe it's supposed to have the gap to keep the stock from splitting.

Check the little screw that holds the spring for the loading gate. Be very carefull not to over-tighten it. Might as well check all the other screws too. Byw, use a hollow-ground screw driver (common bits), so you dont bugger up the screw heads.

I just bought a new 1895 Marlin 45-70. That makes 4 Remlins in my possession right now and they're all outstanding guns.

Whittaker is running a 10% off sale for the next few days. You can get a Guide Gun for $415 after the discount. That makes it a $315 gun after the rebate.

Here's mine.
