Hey guys, I would appreciate your help regarding the 300 Norma Magnum, which will be a hunting rifle, not a 12 pound bench gun. If I understand correctly, it is a very rare cartridge that is used for long range hunting. My gunsmith is building me one at this time and I would like to know if anyone has had any experience positive or negative, with the cartridge.

My gunsmith told me that he has built several for customers and they have all performed great. Just wondering if anyone here (especially the gunwriters) has extensive knowledge regarding this particular cartridge. Any info would be appreciated.

Isn't that a shortened 300 RUM???
About the same as a 300 Dakota??

I prefer classic.

Just curious but why? What's the advantage over the .308 Norma, .300 WM, .300 Wby, etc., etc.

Don't blame me. I voted for Trump.

About 12-19 gr. of powder gain on a shorter case with a .585 rim if that is an advantage. I liked my 308 NM which I given to my gr'dson, and now having a 358 NM built just cause I can.
Actually I have about 500 358 250 gr. bullets that need shooting. Cheers NC

It's your basic, necked down, 338 Lapua. It IS, basically, a 12+ pound bench gun. You could make it lighter, but that notion would last.as long as the "ultralight. 340 Roy" craze of a few years back...which, oddly, coincided with the "kick me in the jmmy...no, I really mean it, kick me in the jimmy" craze that took place some time in the late 80's into the 90's.

You are right. I did get up on the wrong side of the bed. Sorry for the hassle.

It's a necked down 338 Norma, the idea was to fit long range bullets into 3.6" magazines. In this case the 230gr Berger will fit in a 3.5" OAL. A RUM with similar ballistics would be almost 4" long.

Shouldn`t you have asked these questions before the build?

I thank you guys for all your replies. Now I have another question for you. I am building it using an HS Precision stock ( 3.5lbs ) and a 24" Rem Varmint barrel. My question is concerning recoil. I am putting a spiral muzzle brake on it, and I am just wondering how hard the rifle will kick. Any info would be appreciated.

The sniper govt fraternity is seriously looking into this round. Something to bridge the gap between the 300 win mag and 338 Lapua. Read several articles a few months ago. Just another toy for the defense dept to play with.
