I'm confused then. I thought you said that the 08- and -06- based cartridges are equal but now one has an advantage?

And we all know the 257 Roberts, and 25 Souper, are the equal of the 25/06.

My decision to build a 6.5-06AI instead of a standard 6.5-06 seems wiser all the time. Thank the Lord I didn't saddle myself with a custom rifle using an obsolete cartridge!

Why build a 6.5-06 when a .260 Rem has it all over the 6.5-06 in terms of case design, efficiency, powder choice, etc? What would my girls have thought of me? The shame!!! The horror!!!

Why QuickLOAD , selecting just the .260 Rem, 140g AMAX and Hodgdon H100V powder, suggests a maximum velocity of 3,411fps . That puts even my 6.5-06AI to shame as it can only reach a chrono'd 3075fps with that bullet and powder! Making only one change, to select the 6.5-06 A-Square, the maximum QuickLOAD velocity drops to 2955fps.

I guess Lame_Bob is right - the smaller case dominates.

Either that, or QuickLOAD results need to be taken as less than gospel, as the manufacturer clearly states.

I think I have it figured out though, after "getting to know" this blowhard. He really wants to be the Poobah, but realizes there can be only one Poobah at any given time. He is trying to overwhelm us with his vast knowledge (take that GregW), and get enough sheeple on his side to start a coup.....to become the new Poobah.

People proclaiming the 30 06 is obsolete will (or already are) be obsolete long long long before the 30 06.

I've always had one around. Like you I have strayed but always had one and dust it off from time to time. Mine is a Ruger No. 1 that shoots remarkably well with any weight bullet near max. Although my current "go to" is a 280 AI. I hardly find an '06 obsolete.

I've got two 06's that are identical, Coopers Model 52 with Swarovski scopes. They are my go to rifle for Texas white tail and hogs. Killed three elk and a black bear with them as well. I switch which one I take each time so one doesn't feel discriminated against. The are both sub moa with a shooter better than me and are cheap to shoot with factory loads.

I also have 338 win mag, 308, 243 and 7mm for hunting. I sometimes shoot one of these as the primary just for variety but always have one of my 06's as a back up. To me the 06 is what American Express used to aspire to be, Don't leave home without it!
