can some one tell me if a 3 screw ruger with 6 numbers in the serial and the first 3 being 465 is a 22mag or 22lr?

Yup. Made in 1965

Just yesterday I came across a mint as NIB Ruger Single-Six with 6 1/2" barrel serial number 352,XXX and its frame is NOT marked as a 22 Magnum!
It does have 2 (two) interchangeable cylinders one in 22 L.R. and one in 22 Magnum!
The serial number places it in accord with Kragman1's linked to chart as being manufactured in early January of 1963!
Again the serial number is 352,XXX.
The original receipt shows it was purchased on February 25th of 1963 for $48.50!
What I am getting at is my serial number, of my as NIB Ruger Single-Six "Convertible" fits right in to Kragman1's linked to chart for "Magnum's" - yet is not marked 22 Magnum on the frame as I understand the 22 Magnums of that era were.
So I am curious how "we" can be certain "it's a factory Magnum"?
I hope in my inexperience with these older Rugers that I am not muddying the waters on clarification of Gaswamp's pistol (or the one he is interested in) is it a 22 L.R., a 22 Magnum or a 22 Convertible.
Again according to one source I read the 22 Magnum Single-Six's of this era are marked on the left side of the frame as: "RUGER SINGLE-SIX - WIN..22RF MAG.CAL."

Mine is serial number 324,xxx and is marked on the frame 22 magnum. I think some of these gun companies are kind of haphazard with their use of serial numbers. I ran into the same thing with a Winchester 21 that seemed to have been built out of sequence. They make a run of frames which are then marked and when they build the gun they don't pick the frames by number. They just grab some. It definitely makes things interesting.

It very well may still be a good pistol. Does everything else match up with what it should be, or what you want in a pistol? Barrel length 6.5 inches etc. They are great shooting pistols. If the price is right why not?

Gaswamp: SO... then, it's my un-educated guess that you have been looking at a Ruger Single-Six Convertible that is now MINUS the 22 L.R. cylinder?
If the price is right they are really fun guns.

thanks guys....unfortunately I was unable to acquire the pistol for the tidy sum of $175...Seller had an uncle that wanted it so pistol staid in family.

There's a 3 screw Single Six at my LGS.
Story is Ruger botched some bbls and cut them down, so this version rare and of only a couple hundred.
They have $1500 on it (it books for that).
No box or papers though.

Some Magnum Only models weren't marked.

From the Red Eagle News Exchange guide:

"In the 340xxx to 398xxx range Magnum Only [/i] not marked magnum[i] only 10 known in three different "transition" variations.

No "Magnum" Single-Sixes are known to be produced after 1964.

Some "Magnum" models were returned to the factory for fitting of a 22 LR cylinder. When the convertible Single-Six was finally offered,
these earliest 6 1/2" convertible Single-Sixes still had Magnum-marked cylinder frames."

There are many variations so contacting the factory for an authentication letter is the best way to know exactly what you have.

Steveco: So tells us HOW one is to differentiate between a Ruger Single-Six "Magnum" (seeings its NOT marked!) and a Ruger Single-Six "Convertible" that simply only has the 22 Magnum cylinder in it?

P.S.: My just this week purchased Ruger Single-Six "Convertible" has both the 22 L.R. cylinder (serialized correctly) and the 22 Magnum cylinder (serialized correctly) and its serial numbered box is marked Ruger Single-Six 22 W.M.R. (not convertible). Again the receipt for this mint condition pistol is marked Feb. 23 1963

By the serial numbers.

According to the Ruger on-line records:

Single Six Magnums (1959 - 1969) have serial numbers starting with 3,4, or 8.
Single Six's (.22 LR) and Single Six Convertibles (.22 LR & .22 Mag. cylinders) have serial numbers starting with 2 or 6.

NVhntr: So.... then, I do indeed have one of Steveco's extremely rare "only ten known" Ruger Single-Six 22 Magnums that are not marked as such on the frame!
As my Ruger Single-Six has a 6 1/2" barrel, has serial number 352,xxx, the frame is NOT marked 22 Magnum, the cylinder is facory stamped with the serial number and the original serial numbered box (hand inked serial number) is marked "Ruger Single-Six 22 W.M.R.!
Maybe I should buy a lotto ticket today?
I think I will though, head over to the "Ruger Collectors" site (if they have one?).
