I've got a JM stamped golden 39a that I traded for about 10yrs ago. It has always been very reliable and I've probably put about 3000rnds through it since I've had it with no hiccups. Just recently it quit firing.......
When I say quit firing, I mean the firing pin is no longer hitting the rims. Initially I thought weak hammer spring and light primer strikes but upon further inspection, the firing pin is not even touching the rims. Also the firing pin just slides back and forth in there. Is it supposed to do that or is it supposed to be held under tension with a spring or something? Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!

Ya, I can point the muzzle in the air and the firing pin slides backwards as shown in your last pic. Point the muzzle towards the ground and the firing pin slides far enough forward that the hammer wont even touch it. Gonna pull my firing pin out when I get a chance to see if it looks like yours.

Pulled the firing pin, looks pretty much like yours. A few manufacturing differences but pretty much the same. Not broke and no appreciable wear that I can tell. One thing I did notice is that the hammer is also not catching when cycling the lever aggressively. Work it slow and it catches but the trigger pull is extremely light if it does, I mean 6 oz. light. What the heck is going on with this thing, never had this trouble before?

I'd say the hammer sear notch has worn. May need a good smith to recut it, maybe harden it.

Hammer spring may help, but I doubt it will solve hammer not staying cocked, cycling the action.

OK, check the hammer pivot screw, if it gets loose it will cause all sorts of strange malfunctions. The fact that this started all of a sudden makes me think there is nothing wrong with your trigger or sear. Also check the trigger return spring screw.

Looked at all the suggestions offered and couldn't find a solution...Dropped it at the gunsmiths yesterday, I'll post the results....
