my son is thinking of moving to Tuscon this fall.
what would you rate the conditions there,as far as drug cartels, crime etc?
my son is a fairly naive 20 year old.

I don't live there, I visit and hunt and I LOVE Tucson!
I'd spend winters there some, but not summers!

It's hot and muggy right now. Tucson area is better than Phx area as far as the weather and social climate go, but politically Pima County is a democrat hole. In the 60s and 70s it was a fairly decent university town with a nice Hispanic influence. Since then the pop has grown and development spread tremendously.

Much influx of illegals and all that come with that (it's been a "Sanctuary") has diluted the old culture. There are a few small pockets of nice places to live in town, but lots of nice desert and foothill residential locations in surrounding communities and the county area. Most of Tucson proper seems messy and degraded in class - and there are BIG crime problems in much of that city. At busy times they have very bad traffic low east/west, and north/south is not much better - never planned/built good E/W arteries.

I enjoyed the area and still like it, but would NOT live in the city itself and would go into there as little as possible. Then again, am, spoiled rotten by where we live.

I liked Tucson. Great deer and predator hunting down there.

It has crime just like any other city. I kindly doubt it's one of the more dangerous cities in the U.S.

Of course hunting down there you want to keep the illegals in mind but by and large they are not a problem to hunters. I can't say I've read of a violent account between wets and hunters but I bet Google would turn up something. It's worth keeping in mind regardless. But the hunting is great. And it's my country God dammit, I refuse to let them dictate where I hunt.

As long as he stays away from the South side of town he should be golden. I grew up in the Southside back in the 60s and 70s when it was just the poorer area to live but things have really changed since then. Now I would estimate 75% of all crime takes place there. I still visit there alot since most of my childhood friends still live there. Not uncommon to hear random gunfire after dark. I never go there unarmed. Truthfully, if he is Anglo, and is not street wise around the SBs*, they will eat him alive. These MFers who are ruthless and have no respect for life commit their crimes and haul a$$ across the border, which is less than an hour away, and wait for the coast to clear and come back to start all over again. The other 80% of Tucson is absolutely great. PM me and I will give you my phone no. and we can talk.

* (SBs) We call them Scratch Backs since we have no river to cross they all go through the fence

(Full Disclosure) Our government says I'm latino but I was born in America, served in our armed forces, pay my taxes, am a proud card carrying Republican and I hate those Cockroaches

I've met George, "Old Tucson", and he is good folks. We left the city and area in 1978 and he's been there a lifetime - so my views merely are a comparison to a 40 year-old picture. He's in it - I would trust his word.

I live about 35 miles east of Tucson so we go there regularly for shopping and such. Politically Tucson and Pima County is one of the most liberal areas in the state. The other is Flagstaff. Both are largely influenced by the University system. Tucson and Pima County consider themselves a sanctuary city (county) for illegals. Traffic is a problem due to efforts to be bicycle friendly and pedestrian friendly. This disrupts the flow of traffic and in a confrontation between a bicycle or pedestrian and a car, the car always wins.

Tucson has a very friendly climate. The desert around Tucson is conducive to hunting with an abundance of wildlife compared to some areas in Arizona. Mount Lemmon is just outside Tucson and has snow in the winter. Even has a ski lodge and a little community called Winterhaven. The mountains and parks have hiking trails and outdoor activities are very popular.

There is a lot of gang and drug related crime in certain areas of Tucson. Stay out of those areas if possible but if you need your radiator fixed or some upholstery work or muffler work, go during the daytime and leave before it gets dark.

There are several casinos in the Tucson area. The Indians lost a few battles along the way but they are winning the war as the white man is anxious to hand over his cash. They also have some top name entertainers if one is into concerts and such. Tobacco is best purchased on the reservation to avoid taxes.

Tucson reminds me of a horse I once had. He was a pretty nice horse except for a couple of things. He was a little hard to catch and not much fun once you got him caught!

Fluffy, is he looking for work, or to go to school? Or start a new life? pretty hot 4 months of the year. like others have said, stay out of bad neighborhoods and stay away from bad friends, he will do alright.

tell him to meet new people at church or school, instead of bars or bus depots. Not a guarantee, but it does help the odds.

I moved to Tucson in 72. While I have seen this city increase in population it has not gotten too large. Phoenix comes to mind as an example of too much of everything with traffic being very tedious. Some have said traffic is bad here in Tucson. I would disagree as it flows nicely even when the streets are full with rush hour traffic. The worst is that you may encounter a few intersections where you may have to sit for a second cycle but that is only during rush hours.

There are not many high paying jobs here. Hopefully you son has already secured a job.

Few things the lame liberal city politicians have done ever seem to affect me or my friends. The only one that comes to mind are some of the poorly maintained roads. That is getting better as of late.

The city is large enough that every conceivable need can be met. Every area of Tucson has a cluster of stores nearby that will meet your needs. No need to go across the city for food, hardware, car care, entertainment etc. Naturally there are speciality shops that occasionally need to be driven a distance to visit. As for the southside it is fine except perhaps at night. Quite frankly ANY nighttime activity in any city contains some risk compared to daytime.

I am thinking the University area might be a nice place for your young son to live at first. Lots of young people to interact with. I began living there myself.

Tucson has a large artistic population. We even have a two glass blowing studios and even a school teaching glass blowing,

There are quite a few gun ranges, plus we can shoot on Forest Service or BLM lands lands which are closeby .

Bird hunting in Az may be the best in the country. We have long seasons for many species of birds. Az has what we call "the big 10" game animals too.
I have been hunting all over southern Arizona for decades and never had any issues with illegals even when I am hunting mearns quail along the border.

When comparing all the states, Az is number six in amount of public lands. There are hundreds of miles of jeep trails to explore. Hiking trails as well. There are mountain ranges with up to five ecosystems.

IMO Tucson's weather is some of the best in the country from October through April. Winters are mild and we often will be found hunting quail in shirt sleeves in January! Sure summers are a bit warm but that is mostly June and the early part of July. Once the monsoon begins things cool down and unless you are an outside laborer it is easy to endure.

I would venture to say your son will enjoy Tucson.

Azshooter has highlighted most of the positives. We always liked that area of AZ (probably the best) and may get back there when we have to move off the mountain. But, crime in Tucson is not to be taken lightly, and some areas are downright nasty - confirmed by a recent update from two good friends who have lived there all of their lives - one a TPD officer and one a long time county probation officer.

I was born in AZ and have lived all over the state, including Phoenix (multiple times), Tucson (twice), Show Low, Flagstaff, Payson, and Young. Tucson is my favorite place in AZ. I have a friend there who describes Tucson as "the last of the big small towns." That sums it up about as well as anything.
