Anybody watch HBO's new listing of the month... Mel Gibson's 2016 release of "Hacksaw Ridge" about Corporal Desmond Doss, the only Conscientious Objector to have ever one the Medal of Honor in combat under fire. Went through the entire war as a Combat Medic on the front lines and having never touched a weapon the entire time. Fantastic story, but one that doesn't really do the man justice, having jumped directly from basic training to the battle for Okinawa and showing less than a week of his combat actions, when he actually enlisted and entered the service at the outbreak of war and saw many battle actions and showed bravery thorough-out them all. Heck watched the movie 3 times over the weekend.

The whole movie was crap.
From the stupid cargo net over the close
Cliff till the credits, I couldn't wait till it ended.

Not nearly enough minority and female actors. Too much violence. Thumbs down.

You are correct, the man is bigger than any movie could be. He was a hero before that battle.

Greyghost, I had two uncles who were conscientious objectors. Both served..... One was an ambulance driver in London during the nightly London bombings by the Germans. The other was a medic... Was wounded during during the Battle of the Bulge, and spent several weeks outside of Berlin waiting on the Russians to arrive. He was in lots of intense combat and cannon fire from the retreating Germans. memtb

It didn't make sense why the Japanese didn't rain down fire on the troops loly gagging at the bottom of the cliff. Why didn't the Americans dig in at the top of the cliff, emplace heavy weapons and barbed wire? The movie left these important facts out.

I liked it. Best WWII movie to come along in several years!

I thought it was a pretty good movie myself.

As to it's accuracy, according to this site, there were some of the usual and expected Hollywood changes, mostly in incidental details, but the bulk of the movie was pretty close to factual.

http://www.historyvshollywood.com/reelfaces/hacksaw-ridge/

" Did they really use cargo nets to ascend the ridge?

Yes, and medic Desmond Doss was one of the three men who volunteered to go up the ridge and hang the cargo nets (something not shown in the movie). They were the same cargo nets that the men had used to climb down from the army personnel carriers into the landing crafts that took them ashore. In the photo below, Desmond is seen standing on top of the ridge. The photo doesn't convey the sheer danger he was in up there. The photographer refused to get any closer for fear he would be hit by Japanese fire...."
