I replaced my factory hogue stock with a Ruger paddle stock I picked up. Installed a limb saver pad and couldn't be happier with the rifle.

I dropped my Ruger Alaskan - now a 404 Ruger - into a laminated Ruger stock. It added weight over the Hogue and provided me with a better fit overall.

I have a 416 Ruger Alaskan at the gunsmith being bedded into a McMillan Classic stock.
I have longer barrelled 375 Ruger in the same stock and factory 375 Ruger Alaskan in a McMillan Hunter. I like both of these styles.

The boat paddle stocks are probably the toughest , and my first choice, but with a bit of grinding the Hogue stocky are easily improved and McMillan makes a few good designs as well.

Phil, I used your photos and instructions to reshape my Alaskan's Hogue factory stock. It made a difference in handling, but when I had it rebored to 404 (by Danny Pedersen), I wanted some added weight so I replaced it with a laminated stock.

Hope to get out your way to use this rifle on a brown bear before I get to old to walk after them.

The plastic stocks of the stainless Hawkeyes, should also work. One of these from a 338 Win should fit fine, and I assume one off a 300 win would also. I have a couple of these as take-offs, and I am considering putting on a couple of additional Alaskans that I have. These appear to be pretty stiff stocks. I certainly like their looks better than the Hogue. The Hogue is definitely functional, though bulky to me.

The problem I have seen when using the Ruger plastic stocks with the .375 and .416 is that even with a crossbolt and bedding they seen to flex just enough that the little rail un the underside of the recoil flats eventually caves in the front of the magazine box enough to cause feeding issues.

I will skip that idea then. I have no desire to deal with future feeding issues.
I am using my 23.5" barrel with McMillan Classic stock this year. I will say that I miss my 20" barrel a bit. Currently hunkered down in tent as the rain pours and the wind blows. Pretty strong winds last night.

Phil, are you adding a cross-bolt and glass bedding your canoe paddle stocks on 375s and 416s?
