Hi all,

I have a batch of 110 grain Barnes TTSX bullets in 270 Winchester. I have the Barnes reloading manual (also see pdf version here) but I don't have the powders listed there. I have Norma 202, Norma MRP, Norma 217 and Vihtavuori N560. I think Norma 202 might be the most suitable powder for this light bullet, the others are too slow. Any thoughts ?

Thanks,
-Omid

I have no experience with the powders that you list. But FWIW IMR4350 works very well in my M70 270 with 110gr TTSXs.

I'd suggest starting with whatever powder you have that is close to IMR4350 in burning rate.

Start in the middle of the 130 grain data MRP is there. N560 has been great with 130's in my 270 win Accumark it may be worth a try.

Good luck and shoot straight

Sounds about right and as stated you can use 130 data and go from there.

N202 is fast for that use, and MRP or N560 are slow.

I'd rather use any of the latter and use a Magnum primer,

Optimum burning rate that would give maximum speed and a full case would be N204, quite similar to Re19.

Just my 0.02

That was my feeling too. I reviewed several burning rate charts after posting my question and concluded that Norma 202 is too fast. Norma 204 is perhaps the right powder and in ints absence, the right (and safe) choice would be to try N560 or MRP.

Yes, that's a wise approach. MRP and N560 are very close and they are both very close to RL 22 and H4831SC so data from any of the latter powders should be a reasonable starting point. I load Lapua Naturalis bullets in other calibers I have but there is no Naturalis for 270. confused

Heard to many times that MRP and RL 22 are the same or very similar to discount. N560 and 210m primers was like magic with 130 Classic hunters and NAB's in my 270 win. Don't forget to post results.

Thank you for the additional information. Looking at various data, it looks like up to 60 grains of N560 should be OK. I am setting the COAL to 3.22" (the Barnes manual suggests 3.24"). This way, all the circular bands around the bullet will fit nicely inside the case neck and will give a better grip. In this configuration, the bullet will be approximately .20" away from the rifling.

60 grains of N560 and 130 NAB and classic hunters shows no pressure signs. Without specific data my review indicates 60gr would be closer to minimum with a 110gr than maximum. I wish I had quickload to help you out.

Don't forget to post your results.

You might be right. Looking at a Lapua manual (3rd Edition), I found loads listed for N160 and even N165 for 100 grain bullets. N560 is in between the two interns of burn rate. This manual also shows N560 being used for 130 grain bullets (60 grain max). So, yes maybe 61 or 62 grain of N650 will be max for the 110 grain TTSX and 60 grain would be on the safe side wink

I loaded 12 cartridges (4 loads, each 3 test rounds) using N560 and also another 12 using IMR4350 (I found an old container among my reloading stuff, probably from 10 years ago). Then I went to the range and tested them. I got very good results with a couple loads including this incredible touching group (my M2 load, N560 powder). I will post velocity data shortly.

Omid thanks for the update looks like N560 is working as good with 110's as well as with 130's for me. Glad to hear your experiment worked out. I need to revisit that load with the 130TTSX or the 110tsx. Was that the 60gr load which primer?

Been shooting the 150NPT for a couple of years in mine with no major complaints. Be sure and update when you get some more info.

Good luck with the hunting this season you should have plenty of confidence if that accuracy is repeatable.

Thanks Bob! Here are the exact charge and velocity data for the loads I tested. Overall, my favorite is the load with 59 grain of N560. The next best load is 60 grain of IM4350 which is a compressed load and produces very high velocity and good accuracy (1 inch group).

My load development for the 270 is practically finished! wink laugh

Thanks for posting, have some to load up myself. No 560 but have 4350 to try.
