Just noticed that Cabelas is listing a 3x9x40 Leupold American Marksman scope in the Bargain Cave for $149. It features a "Wind-Plex" reticle. I never heard of that model scope and I can find no reference to it on the Leupold website. Anyone have any experience with this model? Is this simply a VX1 with a special reticle?

I have absolutely no clue, but thank you. This may very well be just the ticket for my new Ruger American .308....I am sure its just a VX-1 with the Wind Plex made exclusively for Cabelas...

Yeah, that was what I was thinking....how else would they end up in the Bargain Cave?........so I am thinking you are correct; it looks like this was was one off made for Cabelas. probably a VX1 with a nifty reticle for the tactical crew.

The Wind Plex isnt really a "tactical" type reticle....but it is something that typically isnt seen in the VX-1 scopes.

Actually it's a LR Wind-Plex, with dotz added. And it seems everything they have on sale shows as being in the Bargain Cave for whatever reason.

I saw this on another forum earlier today. It is/was a special run just for Cabelas. Probably a Rifleman or VX-1 scope with a special reticle. I'd think it worth $150.

Windplex is somewhat common. Somepeople like, some think to much going on. My guess is they have introduced an economy line, add fancy rectiles from higher end models. People doing real long range shooting are probably going higher end. But there is a cheap market to compet with.

At $150 store price, might make a good 22 scope.

Not sure its a bargain cave model on the web. But rather a new model they just came out with,

Looking at the photos, it resembles the VX-1 more than the Rifleman in its magnification ring, ocular, and turret caps. Who knows? For $150, it would be hard to go wrong, I would think.

Than again..when you can still get a Redfield Revolution for $135, is it a gamble worth taking?

I remember reading that Leupold builds most of their scopes with most of the same internal parts with the distinguishing difference being the quality and coatings on the glass. So a Rifleman, VX1 or a VX2 are pretty much the same scope internally.

I finally found the listing for it on Leupold's website....I missed it earlier. I am guessing that from the looks of the scope it is probably a Rifleman with a Wind Plex reticle.

I ordered the scope. For $150 it would be pretty hard to go wrong...especially when the nice lady on the phone asked if I wanted to use my credit card or just pay for it with my Cabelas points. grin

I just compared the three on Leupold's site....The specs for the Marksman match those of the VX-1 identically, from dimensions to FOV, and eye relief. The Rifleman is quite different in every aspect.

Nearly all Leupold scopes have a 100 yard parallax setting. Except for their .22 and muzzleloader scopes, which are set at 75 yards.

Thanks for the heads up!!!
I just ordered one from Cabelas. I remembered I had a $20 off coupon! I'm gonna stick it on one of my AR-15's.

They did have some shotgun/muzzle loaders at 75. I believe my slam 2x7 on my inline is. Not sure I can tell the difference, but where I hunt, I ike it in theory.

Yea, those $130 E-bay specials are probably old stock. Leupold upgraded both the VX1 and VX2 several years ago. Current VX-1's and VX-2's are a MUCH better scope than the older versions. They sold off old stock dirt cheap a few years ago when they made the upgrade and $130 for one of the old ones is no bargain. Easiest way to tell is that the windage and elevation turrets on the old ones are friction adjustable. New VX-1's are now click adjustable.

Of course, easiest way to tell is look and see what is printed on the scope VX-I (Roman numeral) or VX-1 (Arabic number)............

You buttheads just cost me $300 bucks minus a $20 credit for an order over $150. If nothing else, couple of 22's are due for new scopes.

I did buy one to find out. Plan to throw one on a new Ruger American Ranch 450 Bushmaster to see if one of those lower dots will coincide with 300 yards.

Iowa deer regulation changes and all....

Yea, but those don't have the cool new 'American Marksman' name.....or even that cool new crosshair with all those marks.

Duplex? Those are so vintage.

Some long range shooters like the windplex. Some find it busy. I can see the advantage of it. But if I were building a long range rifle, I'd probably go higher end. But that is more because alot of my hunting is low light, which I think is where the quality shows. Though zoom ratios and FOV cost.

I suspect if you look at a cheap scope today, it blows away something from 20 years ago.

I received one of the American Marksman in the mail today. Compared it to a Redfield Revolution TAC out on the patio. Very similar in size, looks like the erector housing is one and the same. Glass is almost identical. I like the reticle, not too "busy". I think I'm going to put it on a 257 Roberts project I have in the works. If I had to guess I would say it's pretty much a VX-1 with the long range windplex reticle. At $150 it's certainly worth the dough IMO.

I received mine in the mail the other day. Haven't mounted it on anything yet. Optics seem ok, the reticle is a tad busy for my tastes but certainly usable. Not a fan of the matte finish. Seems kind of cheap. I think this might end up on an old Sako/Marlin 322 in .222. or one of the 243's I have been meaning to play with for the past year.

Midway has the new VX2 in matte finish for $199. For an extra $50 that would be the way to go. Very nice scope.

Received One today.....Glass in mine seems right there with my VX2......The lens edge is not black Like the VX2.....Other Than That seams to be a great deal for 149.99.....

As for the Finish it appears to be the same finish as any other Leupold..... I have a VX2 and a VX6 to compare.....To be Honest the Glass is shockingly Good....

I believe that I'll order one. Talked with a leupie tech yesterday and he said the dots were placed for a .300 win mag 180 zeroed at 200. the first dot is 2.2" below the crosshairs at 100 and should work for the .300/180/200 yard zero at 300. Second dot is 4.8"low and should be close at 400. Third dot is 7.2 low and should work at 500.

With a .17 hmr that is 8" low at 200 the second dot (4.8"low) should put me right on the back line of a ground squirrel...

A little update on the scope......I was going to mount the scope Yesterday and noticed what looked like little silver specs in the Finnish!!!!The anodizing was missing in spots!!!!!

Also there is Little pieces of trash in the scope....One appears to be a little curly Hair on the back of the Objective lens.

I boxed it up and sent it back.
