I always considered the .17 Hornet the Blue Dot load for the 17 Remington. All a matter of perspective I guess. Are you trying to save powder LOL?

Wait for Seafire. He's the gooo rooo on Blue Dot.

I honestly would be really really careful with BD in a Hornet case. Blue Dot works really well, but FINDING where it works really well is touchy touchy unless you've got a chrono or really good data. BD makes "real" pressures and then makes SNORTING pressures shortly past that point. Don't ask me how I found that out -- I already feel like a moron.

So, unless you've got a chrono and some prior experience with BD, wait for Seafire.

I talked with Seafire about this a few days ago. He said he has not spent any time with the 17 Hornet but our own Mule Deer had some input on the topic....Here is what he had to say.
"Yeah, I've done a little of that. In my CZ the 20-grain V-Max gets about 2100 fps, the velocity of the standard 17-grain .17 M2 load, with 7.0 grains of Accurate 5744, with very good accuracy. I haven't tried it, but 8.5 grains should get around 2550, the velocity of the standard 17-grain HMR load."

It's not Blu Dot but it does give us an idea of how to add some fun to the little hornet.

BD is pretty slow, close to the burn rate of full-power loads. Seafire's rule may apply, but I don't know. I'd start at 40-50% case fill, fire one, go from result. Seafire's rule defines max load as 60% case fill with BD. I've tried it in 223, 243, 30-30, 30-06. I stick closer to 50% case fill. Wasn't what I was after, but it worked.

I should add that in my experience, Titegroup produces exceptional results in reduced power loads in small cases and bores. 4.6 gr produces HMR speed in Mach 4 and Fireball cases. 6.6 gr produces 3k in same cases.

Well since my name has been mentioned....

for the OP, if you are looking for input... it might not hurt to tell us what you're looking to do
and be a little more specific...

such as do you want a 20 grain bullet and equaling say a 17 Mach 2, you just want to stretch out
your powder expense.... you're just worried about heating up the barrel in a busy varmint field?

Tite group would be a good choice, but I'll admit to knowing Blue Dot and its characteristics
so I can give some good parameters to explore

I do know Alliant, 35 plus years ago, listed a charge of 6 grains of Blue Dot in a 22 Hornet...

if I was working with a 17 Hornet, I'd pick a 20 or 25 grain bullet.. one or the other to start with...

Considering the small case, I'd test "test rounds" in the following order... 3 grain, 2.5 and then 2.
and chronograph them...

then I'd work up to 3.5, 4 and then if feeling adventuresome ( as I would), I'd go to 4.3 and then 4.5

I'd bet with the case necked down to 17, that 4.5 would be about max....

I'd also be using a small pistol primer, with 3 grain charges and down.

once you get in the neighborhood and tested what loads seem to be safe for your gun/rifle etc
pick what you want and then work up loads in the 1/10 increment ranges.

If you for some reason want to go past the 4.5 range, I'd suggest 1/10 increments..

Blue Dot is pretty predictable, but knowing what you are doing helps a lot..

these are not reduced pressure loads, just reduced powder volume loads...

if you can do this with other powders, there are a lot of alternatives...

4227, 5744, even 4198 or Rl 7.

reduced velocity loads can also be made by taking slower burning powder also...

it won't reach max pressure, but it will give reduced velocity....

for example 4831 or 4350 in a 223 case for instance.

best of luck in your quest... and remember, work up and keep on top of your work...

one cartridge at a time...

i was looking to send 20gr. bullets at rimfire velocity 2100 to maybe 2500fps.

thanks Ed
