I have a JC Higgins Model 50 with some dents in the wood stock. I'm not sure what kind of finish the stock has (if any). Can I use an iron to raise some dents in the walnut stock with needing to refinish/sand the stock?

To successfully raise dents, moisture has to get into the wood fibers. The old finish can prevent this from happening. Also, the heat and steam from the iron could cause the original finish to blister or peel. I guess you could try without removing the old finish and if it works, you are ahead. If not, nothing lost. No offense, but you are ironing over a damp rag, not directly on the stock?

I've use this method over the original finish in cases where it was oil based. It did remove the oil finish but a little touch up with BLO and it was all good.
