I usually see those cutouts on rifles whose wood has been refinished, Rick has even commented on it to me. Don't know why it was so popular. I'll have to look in David's book when I get home, maybe it's not just on refinished rifles.

I got a couple in 25-35. one is rough,the other is not !

Don't see many 1899-H's in that condition.

RAS, if you are referring to the little step down area at the top and rear of the forearm it is a missing piece of wood. The wood is very thin there and tends to brake.
