My adult son and I want to hunt moose and caribou in Newfoundland in 2018. If you have used one of the many outfitters who offer these hunts, please PM me. We don't expect B&C heads, just a good representation of each. We plan to bring as much meat home as a pickup can haul. Thanks for any help.

I booked a hunt in 2011 with Portland Creek Outfitters, through a consultant in Colorado. The hunt was $4100 at that time, but is a bit more now. We drove my new Tundra there, so that we could bring back the meat. I killed a heavy-antlered moose and had a glorious time. I brought back 300 pounds of vac-sealed, great meat.

Larry Holjecin is the consultant and he books for other Newfoundland hunts, also. There are lots of good outfitters in Newfoundland, but only a few concentrate on the larger moose. My hunt was mainly for a bull moose, but large ones are there.

You will have a great time in Newfoundland. Fantastic place and I would sure like to go back some time.

I hunted with Westwoods Outfitters, http://westwoodsoutfitters.com/ , in Doyles 3 years ago. Stewart and Grace are wonderful people as well as all their staff. You should book at least 2 years in advance in order to get a good selection of choices of weeks to hunt. They also hook you up with a local processer and transport your animal to them. We had a great time there and I would love to go back again. Like sbhooper said, you're going to love it!

I'll 2nd that. We hunted with them in 2015 and had a great time. In 2018 we're going a little more high-end and doing a fly-in hunt with Effords - http://effordshunting.nf.ca/

PM me your e-mail and I will send you a spreadsheet of all the outfitters I visited at the Harrisburg show last year and all the criteria that we evaluated them on before we choose Effords.

I would love to do this myself. I just don't see me spending $15k on the Alaska/Yukon deal.

I have a keen interest in this thread. I'll never be able to do an AK-Yukon moose hunt. Please keep us informed and post pics when you get back!

There are two reasons to hunt Newfoundland. The first, is that it is only a fraction of the cost of the Alaskan hunt. The second is that you WILL kill a moose, unless you are searching for a unicorn. Most outfitters have a 90 percent plus success rate and very few, if any, can offer that in the expensive north country hunt areas.

The moose are not as big, nor do they have as big of antlers in general, but I didn't care about that anyway. My guide estimated that mine would weigh around 1200 pounds, so they are not small by any means. Instead of a rack that is 60 inches wide, more realistic is 40ish inches for a good one in Newfoundland, with an occasional 50-incher thrown in. I saw one that was nearly Alaskan big, but he was three miles away and moving through country that we could not even access. He was a giant by Newfoundland standards. They are there.

"The second is that you WILL kill a moose, "

Well, not exactly. We had terrible luck with the weather a couple years ago. 75 deg and sunny in the day, Super-moon at night. No one in camp saw a moose all week. I used the coolers to bring back a few dozen lobsters.

My .338-06 with 210 PT's was plenty for them! wink

I'm the third one here to endorse West Woods Outfitters.
My son and I are returning for a third hunt with them. This time my daughter in law will be with us.
Great guides, great food and comfortable lodging. The first year I hunted with them I shot the thirteenth Moose that I saw.
They have a high return rate so booking early is important.

Myself and Flattop_Johnny from this site hunted with Bob Effords in 2015, I never saw a moose, FTJ saw a cow and and a calf. Effords lied to us, pulled a camp switch and never told us, he's a POS! If I ever go back to New Foundland (which is doubtful) I would hunt with Red Indian Lake.

We have hunted several times with Red Indian Lake and would highly recommend them.
