I read on another forum that guys are getting 3200 fps out of the 270 Winchester with 130 grain bullets. Are any of you duplicating that speed safely? What's the load formula you're using?

Thanks
Jim

Alliant is showing that with RL16, 24" barrel and a 130 Speer. I've gotten pretty close with a 130 Hornady and RL16 from my 22" 270 Win. Pretty good powder for the 130's from what I can tell.

Can't speak for the 270 win, but that is what Alliant is showing for a 270 WSM with a 140 grain accubond over a max load of reloader 26. I think it might be doable with the 270 win with a 130.

RL26,RL17,Superformance and Norma MRP all do over 3200 in my 270 Win Vanguard with the 24" barrel. Just
got 2 pounds of RL16 so will try it next. Using Barnes TTSX 130gr Bullets. All loads seemed safe? Just got a 30/06
so I,m working on that now. Needed a lighter rifle, at least that what I told my wife.

It's easy.

Get one with a 26" barrel and 60.5gr of H4831, NBT and Win brass.

As told to me by the Nosler chief Ballistician a few years ago...

in a 270 or 30/06 you can get enough 4831SC into either case to exceed SAAMI specs...

H 1000 is another good choice if you are shopping for velocity...

Basically Hodgdon/ADI equivalents of RL 16 and 26.

In my Ruger #1 in .270 Win. with a 26" barrel,a Nosler 130 ballistic tip averages 3170 fps. 59 grains of H4831 in a Remington case using a cci 200 primer.

Thought I'd share that my friend's Cooper 270 with 24" barrel gets 3300 fps with Hornady's superformance 130 SSTs and it shoots bugholes! He wanted to handload and I told him he would never find any load that would run with this factory load.

MagPro has been claiming 3239 fps with 130's in 24"barreled .270's for several years now. Don't remember the charge weight.

Did you mean to write that "you can't get enough 4831 SC into either case to exceed SAAMI specs"?

I've gotten over 3k with 150gr PTs in a 22" Tikka, using RL26, 3,200fps with 130gr bullets should be very doable.

130's at 3,200 is pretty damn zippy. And somehow 270's suck.

I got just over 3,200fps using a Barnes 130gr TTSX and RE22, but I also got horizontal stringing. I did not get any of the usual pressure signs.

To cure the stringing, I switched to H4831sc and lost about 75fps, but it shoots 3/4". I got similar accuracy with H4350 but less speed than H4831sc.

I forget the charge weight but I got right at 3200 fps with a Hornady 130 Spire Point and RL-22 from a 24" barreled Model 70 .270 with excellent accuracy, that was my standard hunting load for that rifle. However, I shied away from RL-22 when a different lot gave over 3300 fps with the same charge weight. Yikes. I did back it down to get 3200 again but just didn't trust RL-22 after that.

My 24" .270 averages 3,475 feet per second with Barnes TTSX 110 running 63.5 grains of Ramshot Hunter and Fed 215 primer. That is 1.5 grains below Barnes max load. Three shots normally run between 5/16" to 5/8" at 100 yards. Fired two shots at pigs. One weighed 236 and the other weighed 212. Both were broadside shots with exits. H4831 and IMR 7828 are the only ones I see that can take a 130 that high. May be more....I'm not sure.

I take it from what you folks are saying that 3200 fps from 130 grain 270 Win is at or above the upper limits and few, if any, powders will get it there. I noted that Hodgdon (on line) maxes out with the Bar 130 TSX at 3144 in front of 55.5 grains of H 100V.

My barrel is 24 inches and, though a bit of a rifle loony, I'm not swaping it out for 26".

If guys are saying its safe simply because a chronograph told them so , I urge some caution.
