Just curious about what other 629 fans consider their favorites, I like a 5" full lug barrel for My deer hunting 629 and a 4" half lug barrel for My hiking gun but My money says the 6.5" full lug barrel will be most popular.............Hb

4".

Although I haven't owned a 5" so I may not know what I'm missing.

I don't have or want a wide variety of .44 mag revolvers. 4 inch barrel suits me just fine for my short range hunting and occasional self defense carry needs.

I own two no dash 629's, a 4" and a 6". I prefer the latter. That said, my 5" lugless N-Frames, a 44 Mag and a 45 Colt, are perfection.

4 inch.

Above all else, handguns should be handy.

With a 4" Model 19. Deer aren't hard to kill.

Mine is in 41 cal rather than .429. Had a 6 in. 657 first. Never shot it after acquiring a four inch then sold the six inch.

I prefer the Mountain Gun profile in a 4" barrel; the heavier target rib profile of the standard 29's is a bit much in 4". The 5" underlug is a nice balance but the best of all are the 5" target rib, no-lug, barrels. I had mine made up from an 8 3/8" M29. Probably the best use out there for that barrel length.

So that makes me the first to check the box for the 6.5 inch full lug barrel.

I have 4" Mountain Gun, an 8 3/8" 629 Classic DX and a couple in betweens (but no 5"). I kind of like the extremes best, the MG for carrying "just because" and the 8 3/8 for deliberate hunting. That said, I don't get too hung up on barrel length.

I've owned, packed and hunted with 4", 6" and 8 3/8" M29 S&W revolvers. Makes me think a 5" half lug would be perfection.

A 5" full-lug S&W 629 Classic is the ultimate DA revolver IMO. For SA, I'll take my Ruger Bisley Blackhawk 5 1/2" 45LC though...... wink

I wore out a 29-2 4 inch shooting full Keith loads a bunch. Replaced it with a 629 Mountain Revolver (original model). It appears to be a bit stronger and will outlast me.

First gun killed a nice elk In Idaho and a bunch of deer. Second gun has killed several KY whitetails and a number of coyotes and smaller game.

Four inch is best for my use but would like to try an 8 3/8 as a range gun.
