First time . . . Criminal case. . . Expected to run five days. . . Can't talk about it now, but will report back when it is over.

Good luck... been there on a jury 8 times and each was at least interesting in its own way.

Love jury duty. Since I don't have a criminal record and don't associate with many criminals, I end up in the box every time I have jury duty. It's a hoot and always look forward to it.

They had looked me up on the internet and thought my handloads were too hot.

They probably don't like hot handloads on juries either.... I have never been arrested and always vote... by the jury duty never calls.

The worst jury duty I ever had was a child custody trial. It was like I was trapped in a "Jerry Springer Show" for 4 days. It was pure hell.

I sat on a jury in our local court last December ,a DUI case....Started 8:00 am and ran to the afternoon, at that point the judge (a soft spoken gentleman ) asked if we would like to try and get this finished today if possible...They bought dinner, we carried on... I was out the door at 9:30 pm, done for the year smile

Been called several times, picked 4. Two criminal and 2 civil. One of the civil cases involved 2 old guys in a dispute over a relatively small sum of money supposedly owed by one to the other. The defendant was acting as his own lawyer and got in one sentence during opening statements before the plaintiff's lawyer asked for and was granted a mistrial. Information the jury wasn't supposed to hear was revealed. They can be interesting, they can make you feel that you wasted your time.

I've sat on two civil cases and missed a murder case by the skin of my teeth that was asking for the death penalty. On that one there were only four of us left to be called up out of around 150 summoned to the court house that day to seat twelve p[us alternates. My name must have been stuck at the bottom of the hat that day...What county you in Okie?

I've sat on several. Some people have genuine hardships and are excused but it chaps my ass to see people lie their way out of it. One case was a DUI and the number of people who couldn't be fair and impartial because they "had a relative killed by a drunk driver" was unbelievable.

It's rewarding in it's own right. In one case we convicted a punk gang-banger who shot up a dice game and needed to be put away. In another, we found a young guy who was at odds with his girlfriend's dad not guilty of some obviously trumped-up harassment charges.

Have only been called once, and was excused because I had a non-refundable cruise scheduled that same week. I'd be honored to serve, but am almost certain that I'd be picked as foreman. Not sure how I'd do at that, because I'm not a good people manager.

I've been called a half dozen times and never sat on a jury. I missed a child molesters case by maybe 10 spots. I'm up again on 9-28.

The only time I was picked, I learned if have a public defender you're pretty much screwed. I got to be foremen, mostly because I'm a handsome devil. It was kinda cool reading off the verdict and watching the defendant chit himself.

That is one thing I always worried about when I went. I want to really be fair and not judge by appearance. Problem is it is hard to pick out the bigger liar in the barristers.

Hope it comes out well and justly for all. There is a first time for everything.

I've been called four times, served twice, foreman once.

Take notes and give it the attention you'd hope to expect if you were the plaintiff,

It's a privilege that isn't valued here much and isn't an option in a lot of the world.

The entire jury is taking notes. I took three pages on the first day.

Served three times (one fed civil case that lasted three weeks) and a foreman once (just a month or so ago). In the last case we acquitted (DUII, fleeing, reckless driving, reckless endangerment). Still not sure why that case ever went to trial.

PS,

Listen carefully to the Instructions to the Jury, What are you deciding?

The Judge will give you very specific instructions before you're sent in to deliberate,

It's simpler when you know exactly what to focus on.

I worked for over 39 years for a local municipality and some how never had my name pulled. Don't think I will be bothered now since I'm in my 80's and they probably think I am an addled old fool. (And don't any of you jokers make any obvious responses to that last statement.)

I was called for Fed District (Alaska) a few months ago. This is held in Anchorage. Apparently they didn't want to foot a $500 airline bill plus hotel from Kotzebue...

Flip side of lying your way out of a jury, is those that lie the other way. My wife, years ago in Barrow, was called on a domestic abuse case. You know, not one of those Native women in the pool with her had ever been abused......Not a single one, in a place/time where it was practically a universal life-style.

I have sat in a number of trials and hated every one. Never called. But now my hearing is shot, and I can't hear those high priced mumblers, so I pled deafness when the summons came. I hope they don't try to call me. I really have had enough just sitting behind the bar. And if it was a capital murder case or something with real stakes, I don't feel comfy with the idea I might miss something critical.

This June I sat in the jury pool for 7 days while they selected for a capital murder case. Case was expected to run 7 weeks.

I was the 212 of 212 in the jury pool and was selected to be the 3rd alternate but then got kicked off by the defense. Judge called additional jurors and four days later the jury was finally complete BUT before the trial could start a mistrial was declared!

Turns out one juror had lied about knowing about the case! Judge has them up on charges after wasting 2 and a half weeks of everyone’s time!!

The little SOB on trail was a gang banger that broke into a home to rob and kill a drug dealer BUT he went to the wrong address and killed a young Hispanic father of 3 with no gang or drug ties.

Hoping they fry him.

Been called up twice, both times I was interviewed and excused. The first I'm sure I was bumped because of the LEOs I know or am related to. The second was a firearm possession but a convicted felon, being an NRA member got me off that one. I don't expect I'll ever sit on a criminal trial.

I was called for jury duty once in 2005. I didn't try to call in and get off because I was a Deputy Sheriff in Texas. I showed up and when they asked the are you affiliated with anyone in law enforcement and are you yourself employed in law enforcement. I told them, truthfully, that ALL my friends were Law Enforcement Officers in Texas and I had been one before we moved. I was a freebie for the defense...I'm automatically excluded, they don't have to show cause. I have always resented that. I can be as unbiased as anyone sitting on a jury. What the attorneys can't do is "educate" me, or really it's "indoctrinate" me because of my life experiences. Everyone has a past and like it or not it does affect you. I guess I just argued my way into never being on a jury.

A 17 year old black kid was caught with stolen credit cards and charged with felony theft. My wife was called to jury duty on his case. He was representing himself (mistake 1). He chose my wife for the jury. The prosecuting attorney knew me and my wife and she secretly smiled and accepted my wife. (mistake 2). His trial showed no logical progression or coherence. My wife is a brilliant woman. She is chair of her department at Southern Illinois University and is likely to be the next Dean of the College. Wordy, unorganized presentations grate on her (mistake 3). He had no reasonable explanation of why he had the cards, nor an alternate story to float out there and maybe get one jurist to hang the jury (mistake 4). When they went back to deliberate there was also a black pharmacist on the jury who refused to find the kid guilty because he was black and had been discriminated against. After he gave his little speech he took the morning paper, opened it, blocked everyone off and began to read. My wife up to that point hadn't said much, but THAT pissed her off. Talking to the outside of the paper she told him that she was not going to stand for that and if they had to be sequestered for 3 months she would never change her vote from guilty. The guy had a couple of relatives in the room. It took them about an hour, and he dropped the paper, gave my wife a sour look and voted guilty. Total time in the jury room:1 hour 45 minutes. Total deliberation time: 5 minutes.

I just completed and mailed my jury survey. After answering all the questions, I know I'll never be called. It's disappointing because I'd like to see things from that side at least once. By the way Okie, I grew up in Moore back in the 60's and early 70's.

Been called to jury duty several times but only once made final cut. After speaking to remaining jurists; came the final call. Perp pled down to lesser charges proposed by the county atty. Perp knew he was going to jail for sure with us. My getting a fresh crew cut, high and tight, just before selection had nothing to do with this choice.

Chadwell found guilty on 38 counts of lewd acts with a child

By Jacob McGuire
Transcript Staff Writer 1 hr ago

Daniel Chadwell leaves Judge Thad Balkman's courtroom Friday after receiving guilty verdicts on 38 counts of lewd acts with children. Formal sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 1.

Norman, OK - A Cleveland County jury has found Daniel Ryan Chadwell guilty on 38 out of 40 felony counts for sexually abusing of three children, two of which were his stepchildren.

During closing arguments on Friday, Cleveland County Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Austin told the jury to show Chadwell no mercy when determining his sentence, and they didn’t.

"He had no sympathy for the terrible things he did to those children. And you (the jury) shouldn't have any sympathy for him," Austin said.

The jury recommended punishment ranging from 25 to 100 years in prison for each count. Chadwell is set to appear for formal sentencing Nov. 1 before Judge Thad Balkman.

The allegations

According to a Cleveland County probable cause affidavit, Chadwell married the mother of two of the victims in 2009.

The mother, Chadwell’s ex-wife Kerry Turner, told Oklahoma City Police (OCPD) detectives during an interview that on Nov. 6, 2014 her daughter told her she had been touched by Chadwell.

About two weeks after the allegations were made, forensic interviewers at the Mary Abbott Children’s House interviewed two of Chadwell’s victims.

During the interview, Chadwell’s former stepchildren told interviewers that for about the past five years they had been molested by Chadwell multiple times.

They said Chadwell tried to keep the incidents a secret and would call it his “game," the affidavit read.

The third victim, who was the daughter of family friends, was interviewed by OCPD detectives on Dec. 10, 2014. The girl disclosed Chadwell had inappropriately touched her while she stayed the night at Chadwell’s for a sleepover about two years prior to the interview.

Chadwell was originally charged in Dec. 2014 with 36 felony counts. However, after the charges were later amended, he faced 40 counts of lewd acts with a child under 16.

The trial

On Monday, a 12-person jury, made up of six men and six women was selected to hear evidence in Chadwell’s second trial. His first trial in 2016 resulted in a mistrial.

All three victims testified this week about their experiences, including the girl who was the primary target of Chadwell’s abuse.

“It became more sexual than a father and daughter relationship should,” Chadwell’s former stepdaughter said. “I thought it was just a game.”

The second girl victim said she remembers an experience when she was staying at Chadwell’s for sleepover and she woke up next to Chadwell without any underwear on.

“[Chadwell] was laying behind me, spooning me, without any clothes on,” she said.

Witnesses including Chadwell’s childhood friend, Damian Buitureida, testified that the relationship with his stepchildren, two of the victims in the case, was “odd.”

“Chadwell would give [his stepdaughter] wedgies,” Buitureida said. “Any time [Chadwell’s stepdaughter] and her friends would have sleepovers, Chadwell would have them take showers together. It was really odd.”

The victims also offered graphic testimony about other incidents involving sex toys and a family pet.

Brandon Wood, who knew Chadwell through Turner said there was a conversation he and Chadwell had in Wood’s pool while the families were hanging out that raised a lot of concern and ultimately caused the two family’s relationship to cease.

Meanwhile, United States Secret Service agent and Moore Police Det. Chris Lamar testified during the trial that there was evidence of child pornography on Chadwell’s home computer and his personal tablet.

This guy was the sickest person imaginable. You would not believe what he did to these children . . . for years. The mother is a nutcase as well, but the kids are still with her.

NORMAN — A man who was convicted of sexually assaulting three children in September testified at his sentencing hearing Wednesday. It didn’t help his case and, quite possibly, made things even worse for him.

A jury found Daniel Ryan Chadwell guilty in September on 38 out of 40 felony counts, and recommended punishment ranging from 25 to 100 years in prison for each count, totaling more than 3,000 years.

Judge Thad Balkman adopted the jury’s recommendation and sentenced Chadwell to 3,025 years in prison for crimes he committed against his two relatives and another child over the course of five years.

“The crimes committed by Chadwell go against the peace and dignity of the state of Oklahoma. They are vile, lewd, obscene, lascivious and graphic,” Balkman said.

According to a Cleveland County probable cause affidavit, at the time of the incidents, Chadwell was married to two of the victims’ mother.

The victim’s mother reported to Oklahoma City Police detectives that her daughter told her Chadwell had inappropriately touched her.

Chadwell was originally charged in December 2014 with 36 felony counts.

Those charges were later amended to 40 counts of lewd acts with a child under 16.

During Chadwell’s trial, all three victims testified about their experiences, including the girl who was the primary target of Chadwell’s abuse.

“It became more sexual than a father and daughter relationship should,” Chadwell’s former stepdaughter said. “I thought it was just a game.”

The victims also offered graphic testimony about other incidents involving sex toys and a family pet.

United States Secret Service agent and Moore Police Det. Chris Lamar testified during the trial that there was evidence of child pornography on Chadwell’s home computer and his personal tablet, as well.

last month I was issued a Federal Jury summons. I filled out the questions. They wanted to know what TV shows I watched. What, if any, talk radio I listened to. I just opted out, which anyone over 70 can do.

I like jury duty - It's nice to be on that side of the court room for a change.

That was nicely done.
