Found a pre 64 model 70 standard in 30-06 for $650. Would say it's an 80% gun with pad. Not concerned about collector value as much as huntability. What I want is a somewhat heavy rifle for stand hunting deer, not mountain hunting. Is $650 a good price? What type of accuracy should I reasonably expect?

Market is a little soft now, but I would still consider that a very fair price. Depending on the scope and mounts you choose, it will probably weigh out a little over 9 pounds. Almost all will do 1 1/2 MOA, some are quite a bit better.

I just picked one up for the same price, the market has softened which for me is wonderful as a buyer/shooter. All my pre 64's are hunters too, if you want a pre 64 it might be the right time to snag it up.

There was a guy on another site I frequent that had an all original one for sale that was in great condition for $1,000.00..... I'd be all over that one if I were looking...
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Not bad buy assuming no throat erosion, sharp rifling w/o rust and crown in good shape.

I never liked the too heavy old standard grade 70's. Even the featherweights are heavy, with a scope, to carry.
All guns should be locked up when not in use!

I picked one up about a month ago for $750. 1939, Model 70, .30-06, Weaver K4-60, a grand old piece that belonged to someones father.
I even tried to talk the gent into keeping the rifle because of the history. His wife said, too many guns. I was saddened but took it off his hands.

I buy Win pre 64 M70s, Rem700s, 98 Mausers, and Savage 110s. I put new barrels and stocks on them. Then I shoot a deer with them. Just to get the M70 action ...$650 would be about right. In the above 1949 M70 pic, I will throw out the scope, rings, bases, sling, swivels, recoil pad, trigger, and barrel. I may use that stock.

I am picking up a 1953 featherweight in 30-06 tomorrow at the FFL that came with a 6X redfield. It is definitely a buyer's market at the moment. I would not even consider selling for anywhere close to what I paid for this rifle. It was an online auction so it may be misrepresented, but I was buying the action at this price. Hoping for the best.
