Since the hurricane my registered bull has probably lost 300 pounds.

He got gimpy and I thought he was going to die.

Called a friend about him, and he said he lost a bull day before yesterday to the same stuff...

Stress from the storm combined with mosquitoes and heat.

Talked to the vet today and he said the same thing. Bulls get taken down really quick by the conditions and mosquitoes. He's doctored several bulls in the past couple of days. Half died.

I have him in the pen feeding him up now. Beef developer sweet feed, hay and rest and shade. Hope I got to him in time to save him. Guess we'll know in a few days. I was half expecting to find him dead this morning when I checked him.

Gave him a B Complex vitamin shot too. He managed to kick the snot out of me when I stuck him with the needle... whistle

Didn't kick him back. Hell, I don't like needles either.

Thought I'd mention this because we are still in hurricane season, and others are going to be going through the same thing. Maybe it'll save someone's bull.

I wish you the best, Barry. We tend to focus on the human misery while the livestock goes unmentioned. It's rough on them, too.

No storm I know anything about "back at the ranch", I empathize with you on bull problems. The old saying, "bulls are half the herd". Not cheap replacing a bull either, and after the spring sales, all you can find are leftovers.

I may end up selling him anyway.

He's only 6 years old, but it's hard to bring them back from something like this, and keep them as a trusted herd bull. Hate to lose him, as he;s gentle as a dog. I can walk right up to him in the pasture any time.

I have him in my working pens by the windmill, out in the pasture.

Barn isn't really set up for that, but we have a cool front now, high in the 80's low 60 in the morning. Cooler, dryer air.

We tend to sell them off at 4-5 years old. They get too big and can cripple up young/old cows, that and they lose all fear and become dangerous to handle. Just not worth it.

And canner bulls are still around $1/lb so why not.

But these are range bulls not pets.

Hope your buddy pulls through.

What breed and what did he weigh prior to the ordeal?

He's a Herford, Sam. His normal operating weight is between 1800 and 2000.

Have a friend that raises polled Herefords. Might try one of his young bulls for a replacement.

If it of any comfort to you Barry, back in Iowa, we have gone to keeping a spare bull. It seems every summer one bull spends most of the breeding season healing in the corral.

Wife and I were just discussing lots of places around here are opening up and providing lots/pasture/stalls for horses coming in from FL. We talked about nothing being available for any other stock and the almost impossible issue of moving the #'s of cattle...or in our case it would be meat goats.

Good luck with the bull, hope he pulls through for you.

Six years old is getting on up there for a herd bull, although when I was a kid, we kept them longer than that. I'd nurse him back to health, try to put some pounds back on him, and then put him on the road., and get a young bull.

Barry,

Old son ended up with a New polled Herford bull from some raiser over between Taylor and Thorndale. He's a good animal.

Might want to check cattle range .com. They have a lot of Texas bulls listed.

He's doing better.

Still have him penned and feeding him, as he's still a bit gimpy. Not sure what caused his lameness. No telling...

Hope he improves.
I have a soft spot for Herefords. What we raised, and was most popular here when I was a kid.
An old lady I worked for had a bull named Granny. She led him around with a halter, untill he outgrew any she could
find. When she sold him at the sale barn, he weighed 2324 pounds. Walked on the trailer following her and a bucket
of chop.

She couldn't watch him leave, or look at us.

Not sure what you're doctoring him with.

If you aren't already, I'd hit him with banamine. If he's still stressed, ask your vet about getting some dex also.

Took my bull to the sale last week, and sold him.

At least he lived that long. Not a great market for packer bulls here. (or anywhere for that matter.)

Picked up a new young bull this morning, and introduced him to the cows. smile
