When living somewhere like these hunting camps, is normal to me... Is there anything like this avail in Africa, or is it all from luxury lodges?

Guy, not so much small spike camp-type tents, but many outfitters use tents. They're generally a wall tent, often under a thatched roof on poles. Sometimes they'll add a bathroom off the back, for an en suite arrangement. Inside you'll have 2 cot beds. It's a nice arrangement.

Did the classic wall tent thing in Tanzania and it was great. Zambia and Cameroon had thatched huts with a cement floor. They burn them down at the end of the season and build new the next.

Africa is more civilized than others. Make shift hot shower, cold beer, daily laundry service, morning wake up with tea or coffee brought to you, dining on a proper table with freshly baked bread....yeah, I kinda enjoy it!

Some outfits do spike camps. When we were hunting in the Selous we did a spike camp on the banks of the Rufigi river with a small tent like in your photo. Pretty interesting when the hippos are coming and going from the river in the night and you are sleeping on the ground with a bit of nylon between you and them.

In 14 safaris, I have never stayed in a luxury lodge( or any other lodge). Some tents, some thatch roofed rondevals, once in a hammock between 2 trees( unguided foot safari in Cameroon). Lodges, except maybe in RSA, are the exception rather than the rule.

I do not think I want a small tent in Africa. Most of the animals are bigger than the tent.

I'm gonna spend a good month or 2 in small tents in Zimbabwe. Gonna do a end of season hunt for leftover tags and fishing in Kariba old school style. Pack up the land cruiser and off we go.(damn straight gonna shower at a lodge ever 4-5 days!)

As others have stated there are opportunities to hunt from tented camps. Clean drinking water can be a problem at times, it is not like camping next to a stream in Alaska.

And you don't have to live like a savage.




Or you could really rough it. This is in the Republic of Congo rainforest.

You should tell us about it sometime. Seen a couple guys talk about their trips. Sounds like one hell of an adventure .

There is a hunt report on Accurate Reloading I posted 3 years ago. It was the toughest safari I have ever made, not the least because Air France lost all my luggage/ gear and I pitched up in Yaoundé with nothing but a change of clothes, including my hunting boots. I slept in a hammock borrowed from a tracker- no mosquito net. Everything, including the journey from the jumping off village into the actual hunting area,, was done on foot-not a Toyota to be seen. Similar to drop hunts I used to do in Alaska, only a lot hotter.
