what pellets would you recommend for a 17 cal. air gun ?

I have tried quite a few .177 pellets in several guns including PCP, CO2, Pumps and springers.

These worked well in all:

Round Nose
JSB Exact 10.34gr
H&N Field Target Trophy 8.64gr

Wadcutter
RWS R10 8.2gr
RWS Meisterkugeln 8.2gr
Eley Match 8.52?gr

While they might shoot "OK" in some rifles, I have never had great results with Ruger, Gamo, Crosman, Benjamin or any pointed pellets.

I'd add RWS Hobby wadcutters to the list. They have shot well in my rifles and are what I shoot 90% of the time.

Try the Crossman Premier Hollow Points . They're available almost everywhere and shoot pretty darned good in every .177 rifle I have. They're not always the best but I've never found them to be the worst either. They are advertised as 7.9 gr but actually they are 8.0.

Start with the Crosman Premier's. Then work up to JSB's and RWS. The gun will tell you what it likes.

Don't shoot what somebody else likes.

Shoot what *your* rig likes.

I like the RWS H-points and RWS target wadcutters. But let your rifle tell you what the best pellets are. Each rifle is its own law, particularly with respect to airguns. Bearing surface is as important as pellet weight, so be sure to compare pellets by that measure as well.

I have had incredible good luck with Premier Hollowpoint Hunting Pellets. They are deadly accurate, as the feral cat with one shot, that I executed yesterday at 25 yards will attest. (or won't....he also won't be eating my songbirds anymore!!!)

I like the heavier pellets in .177 because they're bigger/longer and easier to handle, and they seem to provide a little more thump even though they might not carry as much energy or penetrate as well as a lighter/faster pellet.

I like the Crosman Premier Ultra Mags 10.5 grain, but you have to order online and have them shipped.
So I usually buy a couple of tins at a time of the Winchester Domes 9.8 grain from Tractor Supply for about $5 per 500. I think they're made by Daisy.

One thing to note. What I've found, for the highest precision, the head of the pellet needs to be snug in the chamber for best accuracy. And this is why many pointed pellets don't shoot as well as most domed style pellets.
It's easy to tell on a break barrel because the pointed pellets that I've used would just fall right in, and the domed or hollow points would have to be pushed in place.
The Winchesters aren't quite as snug in my break barrels as some of the other domed pellets, but better than the pointed ones that I've used. I use them anyway as they're accurate enough for my casual shooting.

The more expensive pellets usually are more uniform in size, and more consistent.
Even with Crosman Premiers there are two different grades. The cheaper ones come in a tin, and their better ones come in a plain brown cardboard box.
And if I was competing, I'd surely drop the extra cash on the best that I could get.
