I found a beautiful old Sako L61R Magnum Finnbear, made in 1962, chambered in .300 H&H Mag, and before you ask, yes, I've verified that it is all factory original and hasn't been rechambered. I'm going to use it this coming season on elk and mule deer.

I'm loading 180gr Swift Sciroccos and 200gr Nosler AB's and Swift A-Frames. I'm wanting to use temperature insensitive powders such as H4350, H4831, H1000, Retumbo, MagPro, Magnum, Hunter, some of the new IMR Enduron powders like maybe IMR-7977, or maybe RL-23, 25, or 26.

Unfortunately, I can't find any up-to-date loading data for the .300 H&H Mag for most of these powders with the bullets I'm going to use.

Do any of y'all have any loading data for any of these powders for 180gr or 200gr bullets in the .300 H&H?

Thanks in advance! Best Regards,

Tim

There is no shortage of up to data for the 300 H&H.

The Hodgdon reloading data website, the Barnes site and many reloading manuals.

No reason to use those heavy bullets for elk or mulies.

A 168 TSX over 70-73 gr of 4831 will kill either dead.

I also like RL 25 in my 26" guns. 3100 fps is easy with the 168 TSX. It's compressed load, about 81gr.

Wonderful classic rifle. Put my name on it, if you get bored with it.

H4831SC at the 70 grain mark works for me in my 721 with 180-grainers, be they TSX or whatever. Two Eastern cape greater kudu taken, one with 200-grain Sierra and the other with 180-grain Barnes TSX (along with some smaller stuff with Woodleighs.)

I use H-4831 with a 180 gr Sierra Pro Hunter in my .300 H&H. Getting 2994 fps with 70 grs and a CCI 250 Mag primer,from a 26" barrel.

And I'll second what Mathman wrote.

I should elaborate on this to support my assertion.

A while back gunsmith Charlie Sisk did an experiment where he chambered the same barrel first to 300 H&H and then to 300 WSM. The barrel remained the same length forward of the case mouths, and that's the part of the length that counts toward velocity.

Pressure and velocity tests were performed and the the results were similar capacity + similar powder charge = similar pressure and velocity, the case shapes being markedly different showing no effect.

Yup, was written up in Handloader, putting the final nail in the case shape affects velocity BS pioneered by Roy Weatherby.

The fact that the 300 H&H is a far more reliable feeder than any short magnum just adds to its appeal.

Thanks guys. I've got loads worked up with 180 and 200gr bullets using MagPro, H4831SC, H4350, H1000, RL-25, RL-26, and IMR-7977 (200 grainers only). I'll report of the results after I get to the range. Gotta get a new butt pad mounted and fix a minor bedding issue before I can shoot it.

Nice rifle! I second the recommendation of the H4831sc.

I prefer classic.

I know this is an old post, but how did this go, I have been trying to pin down some data for REL 26 in the 300 H&H. I still have time to work up a load for this years elk season and would love to get pointed in the right direction.

Alliant sez:

300 Win Mag

165 Speer:
Winchester 3.34 24" Fed 215 Reloder 26 83.2 3,273

180 Speer
Winchester 3.34 24" Fed 215 Reloder 26 80.2 3,089

Knock down 5% and try.

RL25 is better in the 300 H&H for 165-8s

Any 300 WSM load will work.

RL22 to 26 will work, 25 and 26 prefer a 26" bbl.

good luck with the Elk !

Thanks for the info, I am going to try this this weekend. My rifle does have a 26 inch barrel.

That's a first year rifle, hard to come by. They only made the 26" barrels in 264 and 300 H&H that one year. I have a pair of 264's. Great find!!

My 300 H&H is a Remington 721 with a 26" barrel. It likes a 180 Nosler Partition in front of 64 grs. of H-4350/Fed 215 which gives 2950 fps. It's a relatively mild load but shoots really well.

Seems to me it would be a bit slower than optimum.

There was a nice Sako one GunBroker just like it. I couldn't tell if it had a 26" barrel or not. I ask the seller a couple of times how long of a barrel it had. I never got a reply.
