Yeah, hanco. I agree with you. I haven't been to a gunshow in several years. I watch Gunbroker too.

I know it's a relatively new one, but, I'd have to go with a new production Mauser M98 Standard in 8x57is. Now if I could only afford one...if I had to go with one that is semi affordable, There are a number of well reasoned answers. On the other hand, Batman is still Batman. A Mauser 98 is still Mauser 98, a design inspired by God and therefore perfect, the others are all the work of mortal man and therefore imperfect.

I really like the caliber and I really like the platform....but, I didn't have time to sit around and wait for one to show up on the doorstep. I went to Dick's Sporting Goods and bought a stainless short action big bolt face {308} and installed a #1 contour Pac-Nor polygonal rifled barrel. Then I got a Timney Calvin Elite trigger and pillar bedded it into a Boyd's Prairie Hunter stock.....shoots 1/2 minute and I love it.
Had trouble finding stainless sling swivels...not nickel plated, real live solid stainless. I knew somebody makes them because I have seen them on some rifles...of all the places to find these things...the Remington store online!!! And they are cheap, like $4.00 each.
Right before I built this one I got the itch for a 7600 in 260.....that one wears a Shilen #2 and shoots great. I think I like the 7mm-08 better though.
Don't hold your breath waiting...but if I ever decide to sell it I will let you know. It's hard to let go of a rifle so light and so accurate that looks good too. I hunt black bear and this rifle wears a Kahles scope. The one on top is her:

Gander had their exclusive SS/Syn (B&C Medalist) "Mountain Guide" rifles in short action chamberings 22-250, 243, 260, 7-08, and 308. Cabelas had blued versions of same. They were blind magazine no "clip" and no floor-plate. I haven't tried but perhaps "Mountain Guide" search in gun broker might yield you something.

"Gander had their exclusive SS/Syn (B&C Medalist) "Mountain Guide" rifles in short action chamberings 7-08."

I just picked one of these up from the classifieds on here.

Back in about '88-'89 I bought a new Mnt rifle in 7mm-08. It was the first gun I bought myself and I loved it. One day after coming home from hunting in a blizzard, I set the gun up on the couch to thaw-out and I went to take a shower. By the time I got out, my 6 month old golden retriever had shredded the stock! I ended up trading it off and have missed it since.
I'd love to have another one.

IMO the only way to improve on these would be to have just a little more meat in the barrel contour. They are a little too muzzle light to me.

Kimber 84M; best of 98 & 70 (note that 98 + 70/2 = 84!!) in a light package.

Love me some 98 action but hefty.

I was right behind you, that was significantly below market price around here.
