For something that doesn't have fingers and thumbs he sure ties good knots in his maine. laugh I can't get it untangled.

Another horse with him.

IMO, don't cut it out/off. Soak it in hair conditioner. Run a sharp knife through it lengthwise until you can get a mane comb through it.

If you take the time it takes, it takes less time.

Soak the tangle with mineral oil then untangle it with you hands, then wash and condition, forget the knife it will really screw up a mane. Rio7

I've done the wd40 and even tried something my wife uses. Anymore though and snags that bad I'd just cut it out. But I don't have show horses.

Usually when mine do that I find a burr or twig in it too.

I call em wind knots, my wife calls em fairy braids. Regardless, when it is that bad I just cut it and move on.

That's why I suggested above just running a sharp knife THROUGH the knot.
It doesn't cut it OUT, but cuts it APART.
It does not leave a hole in that spot.

Once done, the mane can be combed out.
