I'm trying to get opinions on value for insurance purposes. Blue Book and Gunbroker are very far apart.
I picked it up under $400.

Winchester Model 54, the predecessor to the Mod 70 made from 1925 to 1936, this is a 1931 in 30-06. This is about 80% condition.
It has the Lyman 57, not the 48. This is a shooter, not a collector. I have a NO VIRGINS policy. smile

Groups tight with iron sites at 50 yards!

Nice rifle for good price with stock designed and provided with nice open sights. If you need something for bush shooting you could do a whole lot worse. For the money I would rather have this than an old HVA sporter which is the gold standard when it comes to affordable old Mauser type sporting rifles.

I wish that old beauty was in my safe. Neat rifles from a time when the gun makers were just learning what a bolt action should look like and what they should have in way of amenities. These are some of the most natural pointing rifles I have ever used. With the drop of the stock, the sights just naturally align when raised. The great thing about your rifle is the fact it has not been cut for recoil pad or that god awful Lyman 48 sight. Those were the ruination of many a fine rifle. Almost as bad as a G&H side mount. This rifle has character in spades.

Oh man, there is another 54 in fancy stock that you guys are tempting me with!
Just like you, I like the old age, and history! The gun case has blood on it, no doubt deer blood based on the gentleman that used to own it.
Thanks fellas.

Oh, and the grouping, one flyer (first shot, light trigger!) Old man (57) eyes. It's the rifle! Not the shooter! 50 yds with deer aperature peep sights.

I had a .30-06 54 some years ago. It had been professionally restocked at some point so had no collector value at all. Despite the factory trigger that most bellyache about, it was a very accurate rifle. Another I should have kept.

Very nice M54. Not a big deal, but the sling swivels are not original to the gun....

That's the first thing I discovered, found some originals on Ebay though. Not sure if I'll replace them or not. Function over form, ya know...
So, $500 rifle? I am NOT selling it. Just need to update my insurance on my firearms.

I would bump it up a bit over $500. You won't replace it for much less than $700 IMO.

Personally, I'd insure it for $800.00...

Any idea what a Stith scope mount for a Winchester M54 would be worth?
