I have in my possession a Savage Model 220 single shot rifle in 22-Shot. I understand these rifles are quite rare. Thus far, my information gathering tells me that these 22-Shot rifles were contracted by the military during WWII for shooting birds in airplane hangars. Those actually delivered to the military carry the "U.S" marking along with a "bomb" stamp. Mine has neither of these markings, so my research tells me it was most likely never shipped to the military but sold on the civilian market. The gun is in pretty nice condition except the stock was cut off by the owner so his kids could shoot it. I am looking for any clarification of my research results as well as opinions of value. Surprised it's labeled as a 220 and not a 219 if it was made as a rifle and not a shotgun, curious.

But it's actually a shotgun, not a rifle--chambered for the smoothbore 22LR shot ctg. using an offset chamber so the CF firing pin could hit the rimfire rim. The story is that the US marked ones were for shooting pests in airplane and blimp hangars, but no one seems to be able to verify that.

I worked in a plant nursery when in HS and the owner "issued" me a smoothbore Remington Model 510 single shot to shoot finches and sparrows that got trapped in the building. And crapped in the building. It worked.

Labeled as a 220. Very hard to find info on this piece.
