Based on the lack of smoke this appears to be a smokeless powder muzzleloader. Few outfits offer model 700s converted as such. Nothing wrong with a smokeless powder muzzleloader. I hunt a Savage ML10II. The problem is the dumbasses who try and turn a smokeless muzzleloader into a 300 ultra mag. All kinds of stupidity out there. From insane powder charges to mixing powders. The intention of Savage was to offer a convenient and reliable option to traditional muzzleloading. The numbnuts are probable why Savage quit making them.
I run a powder and charge recommended by Savage. Right around 2000 fps 300 grain bullet. Flat enough for about 250 yards without any holdover or calculations. So not much different than a modern sabot shotgun round. Except it is not 3 to 6 bucks every time I pull the trigger. Could I ring more out of it sure. But why. I have easily doubled the range of traditional muzzleloaders.
speaking of blown up bp weapons... Does anyone have a guess how many actual grains of Bullseye a blackpowder volume measure set to 20 would give? I'd see myself, but don't have any pistol powder other than 2400. I do hear tell that it is for sure more than a Pietta navy replica can handle lol. I'm just curious how much they actually had in there, I am guessing probably plenty to unwind a modern, cartridge handgun..
You need quite a build up pressure to do that, as would result from using smokeless powder. As opposed to centerfire firearms, it takes more than just minor bore impediments for black powder or substitutes for pressure to reach that level. Bulge or minor split, maybe, but not a catastrophe like that.
This crapp of pushing muzzle loaders to be regular HP rifles needs to go away.
ML seasons should be for more primitive weapons.
Over-engineered bows, modern scoped muzzle loaders, and 1,000 yard sniper rifles are taking a lot of the sport of HUNTING out of hunting, IMO.
I'll bet this shooter hadn't seated the bullet all the way down onto the powder. Surprise...Surprise...
How about you just go away.
They're just another gun, and it defies logic to criticize their use, while using cartridge rifles yourself. Seasons are regulated to manage game, while providing opportunities for their customers: license buyers. Beyond making sure the resource isn't over-utilized and that the implements used are capable of making clean kills, regulations should allow people to pursue and take their game in whatever manner they choose as long as the game has a reasonable chance to evade harvest. .

My apologies to the target of my misplaced venom. Just goes to prove my maxim that when you're absolutely sure you're in the right, you're likely wrong.
