It's been scorching hot here 90 degrees deer movement and pictures this week are way down
Heat wave breaks tomorrow and with more seasonable weather the activity and pictures should start increasing

Our season opened on 9/8/17, but it's been too hot. The cold front is coming through tomorrow and it going to cool off. I'll be out Saturday. Good luck Dan.

Opening day here in PA is this Saturday, 9-30. I do not even bother to watch the weather forecasts....It means Nothing.

The deer are out there in the woods....The woods are their home. They have to go about their business regardless of our schedules...

I'll be out there doing a little still-hunting every time work don't interfere. For me....that is maybe an hour or so before dark during the week and Mornings on Saturday.

The deer are there....I just gotta find them.

Bored this afternoon so figured I'd go sit a set that isn't showing much promise for a good buck and try and take a doe. Plans worked as I'd hoped . Right before dark a doe stepped into my shooting lane

It's 88 by my thermometer, but the wind is right, the crossbow is sighted in, and I'm headed for the woods this afternoon. I didn't put out my camera's this fall, so I don't know what is coming thru, but something is tearing up the creek bank. Hope its a buck or a hog and I can get a shot, does and fawns get a free pass.

I sat last night for the first time this season. I had a 6-point come in early, and stayed within range for 45 minutes or so....pretty cool. But I have a 160 on camera, so that's the only one I'm interested in.

That's ok Dan. It's too early to actually shoot anything anyway. 😄

Think I shot my biggest buck ever tonight, right at dark the 4th buck iv seen this evening!, blood on the arrow, 15 yrds fist size spots of blood! I backed out and when to get a buddie, it started pouring rain, wasnt sposed to rain till tommorow, got my old lanard, Fred , a sled, to drag the beast out. got back about 40 mins after the shot, 1/4 mile off the road, cant find blood the spots I saw were washed out, after an hour in the rain Fred found good blood under a tree, I found several more, lost it about 60yrds out after 3 hrs we came in soaked, hope to find him in the moring, Im bumed felt it was a good hit! i pulled the chip from the cam before the hunt, and I have another big buck, so im not sure which one I shot , the rack looked wider and heaver the the big 8 iv been hopeing for! I now have 8 diffrent bucks, comeing by this stand, NOT like the ones Dan has But 5 are shooters for me! bad leg hurting and beat but not sleepy yet, you guys know what im feeling beers are helping some, wish me luck, ill post after looking in the Am.

Thanks , and even better my younger Bud shot a nice doe out of a stand of mine, last night, double Lung went 40 yrds to drop, about a 10yrd drag to my side by side, I offered to gut it for him as the last deer he killed was in 2005! he declined but needed my Knife, being a nice guy I also gave him apair of gutting gloves, and helped here & there! a month ago he said he didnt think he was going to hunt! over a few cold ones last night he said this was one of the Best weekends hes had ! I Know it was for Me!

Yep , first cold snap and the woods comes alive. I snuck out for the last hour tonight. My wife bought me this recurve many years ago, but I never killed anything with it. I'm too in love with my old Silvertip recurve to hunt anything else seriously, but I promised her this year it would draw blood. After missing a big'un opening day, when this one offered a 5 yard shot I couldn't resist.

Another super close call this morning I had this buck at 28yds need one more step and he took it but turned with a hard quarter towards me,then turned completely away giving me no shot.
34 degrees frost saw 5 buck the other nice 8 pt but I won't shoot him and 6 doe and a flock of turkey. It was a frustrating but great morning to be in the woods

Nice going, it’s those 5 yard shots that can get me too. smile Hard to pass a slam dunk up.......

Tell me about your Silvertip bow, did Paul Shafer build it or is it one of Dave’s?

I love those brow tines Dan! Well worth holding out for. I'm kinda regretting tagging out already.

Lawdwaz, My Silvertip was built in the late 80's by Paul. 62", 52 and 65# limbs. I also have a 57# pair built by Dave and fit to this riser that see most of the work. I shoot it off a rest like it was intended, but no Aluminums or plastic fletch for me. That's where I draw the line. This bow is an Arcadian Woods Tree Stick @ 52# shooting ceders and Bead greenies + bleeders.

Not a good day.......
i went this morning.Back at the truck by 9 am.
First sit in this stand (treeline between barn and neighbors house, deer enter our thicket via that route (one of 4 ways in ).
Can't walk off road to stand.......because a rather irate coon was growling something fierce.
I stood on country road 10 minutes waiting for him to move, and he finally did, growling the whole way.
Note: I need a flashlight and a suppressed .22 for next go around.
Doubt the feds would OK a can that quick LOL

Get back to stand, half hour later it's getting light. Bang bang bang. 3 shots from woods where deer come from.......
musta been a yote.
Nothing comes across field.
Field...........was beans, cut this week, turned under............pig chitted already.
Stand may be worthless now. Leave for next yr if they do corn.

On way home every blue hair in a Buick was tooling at 50% the speed limit.
Doc has me on antibiotic........been sick a while.
Yeah..............barely made it home in time.
Was a Booner too.

So...........proly buy a ladder stand or have a great lunch before heading in to work.

Def not hunting that stand tomorrow.

Oh............on the long walk down the road to the new stand............no big deal. On way back I smelled a buck, must have crossed from corn to the spot I shot my last 2 in gun seasons.
Smelled just like the HS Scent "Buck Rut" wafers. I will have a stand there for gun, but for bow it sucks........have one down about 75 yards from there, on path to oak flat.

Her in Indiana we have the possibility of snow flurries next wknd......which I kind of doubt.
I imagine New York would have a much better chance next wknd.
I remember when I lived in WNY we always had a snowfall around Halloween

Weather ecspurts said rain.
Not a drop.
Windy and warm.

Drove out at 2pm, moved a stand.

Much better spot. I got pretty heated w just jeans and T shirt.

Back home by 4.

See what happens next weekend.

Kid got concussion/possibly broken nose yesterday. Beyond ridiculous.
Hopefully no nose surgery next weekend.

Does warm things up,but I can handle that more than not being able to hunt. South wind is craps for all my stands but 1 and its not morning stand which I need . I'm still doing well however, got 3 in the freezer....grin
Warm weather or not,rut is not far off here now. Got reports of a few big boys on their feet this past week before all the rain hit.

Been warm down in the Catskills too Dan. My son and I picked off a few does for the freezer and have just about enough meat for the next year.

Here's mine complements of slick trick 100gr.

The bigger boys seem to be moving in the cool of night.

I wanted so badly to love slick tricks as they flew awesome.
They performed really good but for some strange reason the blood trails were sometimes a bit on the light side, now I have recovered all but one deer with them and it was a shoulder shot ☹️
Like I said blood trails were mediocre at best and made it hard to track.
Now for 3 yrs I have been using Rage Hypodermics and let me tell you....red carpet baby!
To be honest I’m not a mechanical broadhead lover but so far I’m sold on the Rages.
Also I’m 100% on blow throughs.

Me too !
I shot rage for years and like them ok. I did get tired of checking the blades all the time esp stalking the corn fields. Got good blood trails with my STs.

Suburban deer. Got to love Greece (if you can find a place to hunt and don't mind company) grin

I'm seeing lots of bucks getting hit this week Dan. They are definitely starting to move.

And you are correct Scott! Sprout and I got very closely acquainted this morning. Saw 5 buck and 6 doe. A couple small guys sparing and little chasing by the smaller buck. Sprout the deer with the drop tine in front of his eye passed by perfectly broadside at less than 20 yds. He ran 23 yds after the shot stopped and dropped dead right in font of me. He's a 10 pt and a horse of a deer I weighted him before field dressing and he tipped the scale at 230 lbs.

You can see the arrow(100gr SlickTrick tipped Gold Tip) in the ground and the buck where he died

Dan, just a weird year here but they seemingly come out of the woodwork right around Halloween. There is standing corn everywhere right now so that surely doesn't help.

I skipped an arrow off this guys back tonight.
Accidentally used my 50 yd pin.
He was 36 yds, figured to use my 40 yd pin and hold low.
Counted down 4 pins...stopped him and fired. (My pins start at 20 yds)
Oh well.

That would really suck if a big shooter comes by. Hope you didn't hurt yourself. You can fix the bow.

I’m fine I’ll get it fixed later hopefully when archery shop opens
I have my Outback still if worse comes to worse but I think it just needs to be put in a bow press and string out back on

Bummer.
At least it’s an easy fix.

Couple years ago my brother dropped his shotgun out of his treestand.
Said it landed barrel first and stuck there, he got down grabbed a stick and cleaned the mud out of it.
As he was getting back up his tree a nice buck came running towards him and he ended up shooting it.
Can’t beat that.

I dropped my crossbow out of the stand last year. It also landed straight down on the stirrup. The arrow stuck in the dirt, the stirrup got bent flat, and it stayed cocked. Went down and picked it up and loaded a different bolt. Took it home, straightened it out, put it back together, and good to go.

Is that on the same land as the last one? Thinking the drop tines might be in their genes.

Good to hear the bow is ok. A couple of months ago I took my crossbow in to get a new string and the guy at the bow shop wanted to send it back to Ten Point because the limbs were starting to delaminate on each side. They gave me new limbs and a string. All I had to pay was $15.00 shipping. I wonder if dropping it from 18' had anything to do with the cracks.

You should be able to stack upside more by then! Looking at your pics I got an idea...would some turkey decoys make good "confidence" decoys for your deer?

Saw a slob this morning had to be 25" wide never seen one alive on the hoof this wide.I know where I'll be come Nov 18

Also, a charter boat captain buddy of mine who I shoot 3D archery league with hit a good one this morning. He backed out and I'm going to help him find it at 1:15PM
He said he hit it high but it was only 10 yds away no pass thru
He thinks he got a foot of penetration and is shooting Rage broadheads(I don't like mechanicals)
He said he sure he didn't hit shoulder and that his sight was set at 25 yds hence the high shot
My thoughts are if he indeed got that much penetration at 10 yds he should have still hit both lungs...no exit is puzzling he's shooting at 62 lbs
Of Course it's pouring down rain right now

Nice deer Dan.

We just got back. Here's one for Halloween.

Just over 240 lbs 9 point. His neck measured over 30" around.

Congrats Ed

Unfortunately we didn't retrieve the deer my friend hit.I found the whole arrow about 80 yds or so from hit sight is some of the most impenetrable thicket, couple that with standing water and swamp like terrain with heavy rain. We crawled through and searched the area for 3 hours its my belief he hit shoulder as it appeared there was not much arrow penetration and I think the deer is still alive

Sorry your Bud lost that buck Dan but you were tracking in some very difficult conditions...You found the arrow and that always tells a story. You are probably correct that buck is most likely sore but still alive.

Funny you should say that.
I’ve had several guys around here say they haven’t seen anything for the past week.
I suggested maybe lockdown but they laughed at me.
I’m still thinking I’m right and the rut was way earlier then everybody thought would be.

Hunted PA this weekend not much moving down where I hunted saw a couple doe ,4pt and 8pt only deer I could have killed was the 4pt
My cameras back home showed chasing most chasing 11/6-11/8 I'd say some doe are in heat now and many mature bucks are tending.
Hunted back home this morning after driving from SW PA at 2 am made it to my stand by 6:15 am saw 5 doe and a 4 pt decided not to shot the doe as she was with 2 fawns and I just wasn't up for the work today

courious of this as well,last couple times out ,I seen a few smaller bucks,1.5+probably a 2.5 yr old,just crusing.Also seen a few mature doe alone,no fawns,nothing following.
We have had a doe +2 fawns in the back yard for about 2-months,last week just the fawns, which would indicate momma was foolin around.
I really thought this cold spell would've kicked it in gear.

I bet if you get that one you are after Dan you are going to find an old wound on his left side. Either from a car or gun/bow. That's a unique rack.

Good luck Dan. Keep your powder dry. I decided to sit in a pop up today rather than my usual opening day stand. We'll see if it's a good move or not.

My son passed on a 4pt.
The 40-50mph winds are not fun in a stand.
Slowest opening morning I have ever witnessed.
Only heard 6 shots, now the way the wind was howling I’m sure there were others we never heard.

Your paths will cross. Stick with it Dan, the buck I shot this year frustrated me for two seasons before I got a crack at him. In fact either he or several other shooter bucks would show up, of course on the days that I decided to hunt elsewhere frown.

You must have really low pressure there Dan. Around here you don't ever see a mature buck on his feet during the day unless someone kicks them. I don't remember the last time I saw a mature buck tailing a doe during the gun season, at least not after noon on opening day.
