What should I mix in my grass seed to plant approximately two acres of grass in my tree rows? I've heard rye and wheat both work but what is best to mix with grass seed?

I like a legume, red clover, or alfalfa.

Check with your local ag extension agent. They will have a seed mix appropriate for your area and for what you are wanting to do.

What tree species? Are you going to mow it? It is a combo of red and white flowering crabs, Black Walnut, Silver Maple and Ponderosa pine. And yes I'm going to mow it.

Always a good idea to ask those people, they are paid to know.

Jim, I would recommend the above checking with your local agent. If you open for doing it yourself I would recommend clover or oats maybe. Realistically it shouldn't matter a whole lot if you mow it every so often. Native grass is what I hope you are using. Feel free to call or text or pm me for more info if you like

I'll call the local agent at the soil conservation where I got the trees from. I had them plant 240 of them a few years back. Lost quite a few of the Black Walnuts but the others are doing well. They are getting too big to till around with the tractor anymore. I've destroyed a couple of mufflers already so I want to plant grass and mow around them. Thank goodness for zero turn mowers!
