Cookie informed me at noon yesterday that she had some elk nailed down, and we had to pack her cameras out for a try. Light was bad, and she could only close to within about 300 yds. That being, there are no in your face portraits, but she did get some pics. About 100 head around with maybe 20 bulls. Eight or 9 were 6 by's with the balance being raghorns or spikes. Lots of conversation among the bulls.
PostImage seems to be off at the moment, so I'll try the Campfire system for getting these up. Wish me luck with that.

Right most but lop-sided bull seemed to be running the show. Center bull looks a little lean showing a lot of hip and some ribs, but he's still trying.

Right most was tolerant of some others as long as they didn't get too serious over a cow. Eventually though the herd seemed to separate into 3 subgroups

so the other boys started getting a little action.

Cookie has a few porn shots as well, but doesn't want me to put those up.

About dark a few pronghorn came by to see what all the fuss was about. This one looks to have suffered some eye damage and a couple good pokes in the neck during their recently completed rut.

Final day of archery season here. I've just been informed that we're to make an AM try at the same herd tomorrow (Mon the 25th). If we indeed catch them then we should have some much improved lighting.
Have a good one, and best of luck out there,

Cool, thanks for sharing. Some great shots. That one bull is a little on the skinny side...

Cookie's not around, so here's some porn.

Another group shot.

And a funky antler. Will have to get closer to this guy. Appears that both antlers emerge from one side of his skull.

Fun photos. Welcome to Oregon, elk are on the farmland after openers.

Billy Goat:
Not quite. I was on the road Friday meeting with buds to plan a Wyoming hunt. Cookie spotted this group while traveling north to pick up some butchered beef. No camping involved. She typically spends about 3 weeks out, however, chasing deer in November. Fortunately the elk were still about on Saturday afternoon. This morning (Mon 25th), we found them again but had no chance of getting within camera range. Will probably give it one more go tomorrow.

These guys have just made it through about a 1-month archery season. Rifle deer will open in a week, and rifle elk will open around the last week of October. They'll probably be dispersed by then.

Fireball2 is somewhat correct. We have some substantial deeded properties around that don't grant access. Doesn't take long for the elk to figure out where they're safe.

The bull in the last pic reminds me of Elliot from the movie Open Season.
