What do you think? What filters do you believe in, and why?

Richard, we try to stock up once a year at the local Carquest.

They have the annual spring filter and lube special and a guy can really save some money. Oil and air filters and a barrel of Rotella.

Not sure on the quality but I guess we've had good luck. Like batteries, heard most filters are just re-branded from the same factory anyway.

NAPA oil and air.....they get pretty good reviews and the price is fair. not great but fair. You can find any answer you want to hear on the internet but the truth is I've never heard of anybody losing an engine because of filter failure.

If I lived in a dusty environment I might worry about it a little more but I don't so I just buy name brands and keep em changed.

NAPA Gold usually.

Dealer is actually cheaper than NAPA of the oil filters for the ford 6.7.

I think I'm getting brand name filters with Car Quest number.

I used to work for a company that has an independent parts store. I consider the
staff and manager friends, they sell and use Wix. Good enough for me.

On my tractors, I use NAPA filters. The one exception is the hydraulic filters on my NH TL-80. NAPA doesn't carry them, and factory filters are $100 each. I can order an off brand online for around $30-40 bucks. Since I change them every year, I figure the off brands will last that long. On my vehicles, which are all Fords, I use MotorCraft filters (Ford brand).

No one signing the praises of K&N? I've never bought one, but some seem to think highly of them.

I put a K&N air filter on my Taco when I bought it back in 02. After about five years the rubber frame started to deform letting unfiltered air in around the parameter. I chit canned it.
I can't speak to their oil filters but they're probably as good as any.

In my truck we use NAPA gold too. Just because they are the closest parts store and the price isn't all that bad. I used Fram for years and never had a problem.

I in my tractor I use a Purolator filter.

Went into town today and got the big hydraulic filter for my 100hp tractor.

$100 bill.

It was one of the reusable ones.......10 year/1,000,000 mile warranty.
You still have to wash and reoil it once or twice a year depending on mileage and conditions.
Cost about $70 IIRC

Looks like most of the others are made by Champoin or Purolator except for NAPA which is a Wix..

I had them in my last 2 pickups. Take them out once a year, clean, and spray them with oil, and put them back in. The last filter was in for 10 years, and looked as good as new.

Napa gold mostly....they are made by wix....mainly I just stock up on all my filters when Napa runs the 1/2 price sale...
There are lots of good filters out there...most auto parts store brands are made by wix...Baldwin motorcraft ac delco are good filters...
I stay away from fram pureolater ect....

Ive been using WIX for years with no issue so i stick with them. Use them on everything. And i stock up when i find them for sale.
Wix 51522 is the tall oil filter for the 1999-2007 GM Trucks/SUVs and i use those engines in all my projects so it makes it easy to buy a couple cases when the filters are $3 each.
And buy engine oil by the 55 Gallon drum to get it cheaper.

One year at school for Halloween, I 50ed up with greased-back hair, cuffed jeans, boots, and my Harley-Davidson leather jacket on the back of which I had white stick-on letters that said, "Rebel Without a Clue". The students and staff both loved it (and felt it very appropriate).

For some reason, the Case/!H and NH brand hydraulic filters are very high priced, and not only in the factory brand, but in other brands as well. I had hydraulic pump problems on a NH, one that takes 2 filters, and the filters at $100 each, cost as much as a pump. I started buying an after market filter at about 2/3 of the cost, and so far, so good. I don't have to worry about a warranty, if I did, I'd stick with the store brand filters.

The number of filters made may make price differences. Big, and, fewer sold may make for a higher priced filter? And, as has been pointed out on the 'fire, the hundred dollar bill is the new twenty.

Mine has two as well. The big hydraulic filter, and on the other side, a smaller, metal type filter within a metal housing. It was $93... Parts guy said be would simply clean that one. I did. removed it and gave it two complete baths in gasoline followed by very high pressure air. Got lots of gunk out of it, and it looked like new when I put it back in.

K&N builds good products....I use both air & oil filters......the oil filter with the one inch

welded nut is great for tight locations...such as a 3.4L Tacoma......air filters will last a long time..

clean mine once a year on three trucks.....use the K&N cleaning stuff & re oil very lightly....

do not over oil ! Also make sure air filter is totally dry before re oil...let mine dry out in the summer sun

K&N also sells cabin air filters.........

I have had good luck with Baldwin and luber-finer products.

There was a post on tractorbynet.com about tractor oil filters. It was done by a tractor dealer rep ( Messicks In Pennsylvania). Anyway, cutaway filter of factory Kubota vs other filters showed the Kubota filter had something like 50% more filter material, and had heavier gauge canister steel. Pretty interesting comparison.

Mostly use Napa gold....get them in February when they run the half price gig....they are made by wix...one of the better filters...
Also use Baldwin somtimes....also a top notch filter....
Other ones I would use if I could get them a a decent price is Donaldson ,fleet guard.ac deco motorcraft....
Stay away from the highly advertised cheap stuff....I think fram is about the worst...
Anything with the mfg name like Cat John Deere ect will be top notch....priced accordingly too...

I use Fram oil filters and have for a lot of years.
Available everywhere and priced right.
Never saw a reason to try another brand.
I do change oil and filter every 3-4000 miles

Quit using Fram after I dissected one that had been used for 5,000 miles...

Dissect a NAPA Gold after 10K of use, and you'd be impressed....

Both show a major difference in Quality after they have been used....

A NAPA Gold's media will still be in good shape at 10K, where as a Fram's media is falling apart at 3K....

I like Cat filters much, much less than I used to.

I run a lot of OEM filters, but the main brand is Napa Gold/Wix.

One of my coworkers researches things like this and after hearing what he has found I use NapaGold (Wix). The one not to use is Fram.

I think “Fram” is like Pella Windows. Great name, average product. Wix filters are the best. Napa badges these as Napa Gold. FYI, Marvin Windows are WAY better quality than Pella.

which Fram did you dissect? Local store has three -four different "levels" with differing amounts of filter material..........if you can believe their packaging?

I used Fram for many years, mostly the mid to higher range filter.

Last few years I was using Bosche, but couldn't find them at Wally's when I went shopping this past week. When I send in my oil (Mobile 1) for testing it has been "normal" with 5-7000 miles per change on engines with over 200K miles.

Since no Bosche, this time I went with the K&N oil filters. I've used them for years as my air cleaner elements. Figured I'd give the oil filters a try too. I like the idea of the nut too.

No tractors here folks, pick up and passenger cars............Toyotas of course!

Where I worked until retirement last year it was Napa/Wix for the Cummins and Cat filters for the Cats. No oil related failures that I can recall on 28 motors, used for pumping water (+/- 5000 gpm ) , steady RPM/load , for the 7 or so years I worked there.

How's about K-Mart oil treatment.

Years ago, first car, had to use something along with the 40 wt to keep the rattling down in my old Chevy before the rebuild. Found out the K-Mart treament was STP with a private label on it. Same can even.

PS, your local store brand bread is likely made by Wonder, Bimbo, Sunbeam, or some other "name brand" bakery and the bags just switched when the production line hits the order. Ask me how I know.

PPS, WTH, I'll tell you.................I used to be the guy changing the bags on the wrapping machine.

Never drank in Fairbanks, but when I was buying or chipping in those kegs would have had Bud in them.............................or maybe Bud Lite?

Don't know how long ago he was delivering up there Jim, but I'm sure the folks in Fairbanks were just happy to have beer there.

PS what's this organized crime stuff, we're a fraternal organization, you know, a social club. So what we have late night meetings in the back of Vincenzo's Ristorante. We like a good bowl of linguini e vongole.

Our poker group had a loud-mouthed member who swore by "his" brand of beer. We kept one of "his" empty cans in the kitchen and every time he would holler at someone on their way to get a beer to bring him one of "his" beers, we would open something else and pour it into the empty can (kept cool in the 'fridge) an present it to him. We would then be treated to a lengthy discourse on how it was so much better than the tschidt that the rest of us drank. (We drank "his" beer in mugs so as not to have the cans show.)

Many products are the same, save the label.

Except, of course, Sea Foam; it would never be sold under a different brand.
