Found a load for the 243 that gives me one hole groups consistently. Its 45.1 grains of H4831sc, Fed 210, 2.68 oal, Prvi brass, 95 gr NBT. The only problem I can see if the velocity. I think my chrono may be lying to me as it said the velocity is in the 2680-2690 area. Seems awful slow for a load thats over book max. Primers look good and no other pressure signs. Gun is a Savage model 16 LWH with a 20 inch barrel. Just wondering what velocity you guys were getting with this powder in a 243.

I think your chrono is lying to you although you do have a 20"barrel & most load data will be for a 24" barrel.

That load should be over 2900 or thereabouts even in your barrel.

Try another powder & see what you get..............RL-19 would be a good choice that should be in the same velocity range as the 4831.

RL-17 & RL-25 would also be candidates to try. Old standby for 243 is always H4350.

Old H4831 gives me higher velocity than new lots. My results match yours when using H4831sc. Max loads run under 2800fps with 100gr even in a 24" with some lots. 2650 in my 18". Try H414/W760

I have a .243W that chronys 3000 with 100 grain Nosler Partition. The load is 42.4 of IMR 4350 and Federal Match primers. The rifle is a Savage Model 10 with a 22 inch barrel. Some rifles are just slow.We have an old Ruger 77 in .270 that I have trouble getting to 2800 fps with H4831 or IMR7828 but it is plenty accurate.

Ise H4831SC in three of my 300 Wby match rifles, they all chronograph over 3400fps with a Hornady 178gr A-Max. Did a rifle for a friend useing my reamer and he uses the same load but he never Chronographed it, hes useing my drop chart and its dead on out to 800 yards. H4831SC is one of my favorite powders in large capacity shells. Used it some in a 243 with 105gr bullet and the velocity was good but accuracy was not as good as RL19

H4831SC has been slow in every rifle that I've tried it in.

The 243 is one of those rounds that has a reputation for being a little finicky.

I stuck a strain gauge on my 243, and settled on 44.5 grains of the old H4831 behind a 100 grain Partition or Solid Base for mine. That gives me 2960 FPS at a measured 54.7 KPSI.

The old H4831 is less dense than the SC version, and just nicely fills the case.

Im thinking I may just have a slow barrel or a huge chamber because 43 grains of IMR4350 barely gets me over 2900. Plenty of speed with R26... Just not much accuracy.

4831SC...

if you look at a lot of load data that actually lists the pressure, for whatever reason, those loads
are low pressure....

that is why you are only getting 2650 or so MV with it...

I was told by Nosler's Ballistician, that you can't get enough 4831SC in an 06 to exceed SAAMI specs.

I would tend to think the same thing with 4831SC in a 243, or 6mm Rem...

Running it in a 6mm Rem, with 115 grain Bergers.. Long Action BDL...4831SC will give me 3250 fps
same as with RL 19....24 inch barrel, 1 in 7 twist.

haven't really pushed it in the 243s.. I'll have to try it...

the heavier bullets will bump that pressure up...but I'm betting your slow MV of 2650 or so, is a lack
of peak pressure...

Thats why I use RL19 in my 243 with the Hornady 105gr HPBT, velocity is 3278 fps compared to 3153 fps with H4831SC, accuracy is alot better with RL19

I've used quite a bit of H4831 since the mid-'60s and have infrequently used the SC version since it's introduction. If you have a favorite H4831 / H4831SC handload, it's best to chronograph a few rounds and also check accuracy and point-of-impact after opening a new keg. A powder charge might require adjustment of a grain or two, up or down, to get the same performance level of the original load.

We're told all powder lots vary at least slightly. Sometimes the variance isn't enough to even measure, but it's worth the trouble to verify this. In a .25-06, I've found the difference between two lots of H4831 was worth about 100 fps using equal charge weights. With my latest batch of H4831SC, it takes one grain less powder to get the same velocity as a recent batch of regular H4831 in a 7x61 Sharpe & Hart rifle.

Hairsplitting, maybe so and sometimes it doesn't matter anyway. Just depends on how far one wants to go in reproducing a good load.

gemby: just curious, how much R19 and H4831sc are you using in those loads? Oh, and how long is your barrel? thanks

Been my experience with H4831 as well, usually good accuracy but slow. Ive tried it in the 30-06, 270 and I think the 280. I know a lot of folks ue it in the 270 with lots of sucess, but IMR 4831 gave me the same accuracy and book-norm speeds. H4831 was 200-300 fps lower than expected. My sampling was limited to one lot, so I will probably be trying it again now that I own a 270 again, first up is RL26 though!

I doubt it's the chrono.

I've largely stopped using H4831SC of late because lots in the last 6 years or so seem to be of a very slow burn rate. In 270Win, 25-06 and 30-06 I could never approach book speeds with books loads, even though I have 24" barrels.

Ended up going for H4350 or R17 in most applications where I'd normally use 4831SC and speeds ended up where they should have been IMO.

Taking delivery of a 243AI shortly so I might try H4831SC again, given I'll only be using 105+ grain bullets.

And getting slower over the years. My velocities are so slow I use it just for testing and won't replace the remaining quantity I have.

2740 from 43.5 grains of RL-19... Slow barrel. Outstanding groups though.
