I know they are pretty heavy to begin with but would like to know how light can they be made? How much weight can they loose with barrel contour, stock, fluting of bolt? Thanks

I just weighed my SS Ruger Mk ll five minutes ago on my digital fish scale and it is 6 pounds 14 ounces empty. It is a short action 7mm-08 with a Brown Precision Kevlar stock, solid bedded SS 20" Shilen match grade barrel with a #1 taper, 1.5x6x42 Zeiss Diavari V 30 mm scope, Nylon camo sewn on sling, 1/2" Decelerator butt pad, all green camo painted. Perfect as my go to whitetail rifle. My other auto is a .45 The bitterness of poor quality is remembered long after the sweetness of low price has faded from memory

Thanks I got nothing for you, other than being an unabashed Ruger Tang safety fan and would love to see your finished project and a write up on what all you end up doing. I have a 30-06 tanger in my safe that I'd planned on sending off to RJ Renner and having turned into a Faux Rigby, but this is an idea too.

Dave[/quote] A mid weight fine and it would be a great rifle but you can't get to the really light weight range with a Ruger. Once you get past the barrel and stock each oz will = mucho $$$$. The Kevlar Graphite MPI stock is a viable option and I defiantly would go this route if I wanted a mannlicher. I would start with the Dakota pattern as it is pretty trim and fits me well. As is, with a Leupold VX2 2-7X33 and sling. 7lbs 14oz, probably right @ 8lbs with 4 cartridges. Factory full zytel stock is 1oz lighter than the factory boat paddle, skeleton stock. It wears Ruger rings, which have been hollowed out, a hollowed out bolt knob and some other cuts. The barrel is a 24 inch Pac-Nor #1, with it's shoulder turned to minimum, but with a .600 dia . muzzle. It's a long action, chambered in .280. The stock weighs almost 2.5 lbs., a McMillian with graphite added. It would weigh 22 ozs. less, or about 6 1/4 lbs., with an MPI Kevlar stock like the ones on my M70 Fwt. or my custom mauser '06'. 603Country Campfire Regular 6 Joined: Apr 2014 Posts: 799	You could just find and buy an original tang safety Ruger 77UL. My Dad had one in 270 and it was a real shooter with handloads and a new Timney trigger. I think they came only in long action, but i’m not positive.

I understand that it is not the smartest idea ever but I have an itch and like tang safety Rugers I would love something like a montucky but they cost around $3000 around here. If I do decide to go ahead with this idea I will most definitely report back. I still think a 'light' tang safety might be pretty cool! Thanks again Pieter

He does this by slimming down the Ruger action which is fairly bulky compared to say a Remington. But like Steelhead mention, if you truly want a lightweight rifle, you may be better off to consider a Remington base action. He also can get lightweight synthetic stocks for CZ 527. As well as make your rifle a take-down rifle with removable barrel. Not sure how he does this or if the rifle will keep it's zero like say Blaser rifle does when it's taken down. But interesting nonetheless.

I had a .308 short action and it was a pip. Like a dummy, I let it get away. Not super light, but a good weight and very handy. None of the ULs are common, but can be found with patience. What fresh Hell is this?

Arbine about 10 years ahead of Ruger. Not exactly a lightweight, but it ain’t bad, and it’s a 400 yard gun The only true cost of having a dog is its death.
