What's up with this model/series? It looks like a regular old CRF M-70 in a stock that's slightly less crappy than the Tupperware ones they used to put on the Model 70 Classic.

Or am I missing something?

As far as I can recall they were a economy version of the model 70 to compete with the Remington 700 sps and savage lines generally sold in big box stores. I see them occasionally at fairly reasonable prices and imagine they would make a good venison gathering tool.

I think they are just sporter contour M70s in a polymer stock. I had a made in SC Stainless Ultimate Shadow in .270 that was a phenomenal shooter a few years ago. The stock was ok, but not great, i'd rate it as better than some of the polymer stocks out there, but not as stiff as say a Tikka stock. I've been thinking about picking up another one in .30-06 or 300 WSM (along with .270, the only calibers I see available on GB anymore) dropping it in a B&C lightweight and chopping to 20" for suppressed elk hunting. I don't think they are produced anymore, Winchester seems to have dropped the US to push their cheaper XPR in it's place.

It's a standard M70 classic action with a crappy Tupperware stock. My BACO (South Carolina) Shadow action was as smooth as butter and feeding is flawless. I bought with the intention of doing a semi-custom Whelen. I ditched the plastic stock and replaced with a Mickey Edge.

The Model 70 Black Shadow was the blind magazine push-feed economy grade SA/LA rifle, frequently sold by high volume retailers. The 70 Super Shadow was the Super Short Action version of the Black Shadow.

The 70 Ultimate Shadow was the hinged floor plate control-feed SSA/SA/LA rifle that had a synthetic stock with "grippy" inserts on the pistol grip and forearm.

I have a matched set of the Super Shadows in 7mmWSM and except for the ugly stock they are great rifles. Smooth functioning and accurate as well. Brass availability sucks but not the rifles.

Hornady announced they will be making 7wsm brass.

I have one in the safe. I compared it along side my M70 Extreme Weather. They look almost identical and do act identical. The US is the Classic action in a butt ugly stock. I'm trying to decide what to do with mine. They are a great rifle albeit a bit heavy.

I traded into a BACO Ult Shadow 270 that the original owner had put in a mIckey stock, but piecemealed sold that stock ...so I found a cherry BACO Sporter stock here in the classifieds and you can't tell it is not an All Original Sporter rig unless you closer to it than 3' or so...shoots good too. Would really like to find another one in any of several calibers.
