So I don't run the stone up against the fat part. Do it on all of them

I'm surprised more makers don't put a sharpening choil on their knives.

In a hunting knife it isn't a big deal, but in a bushcraft, fighter, hard use type it has been a weak link so most stopped doing it. Phill Hartsfield did a good study on it after a Mercenary down in South America was shot by a .308 and the bullet hit the blade right between the transition from blade to handle. It cracked across. Phill Replaced the knife at no charge. So he stopped putting Choil on his knives. If I remember right that was sometime around 1992.

I'll keep that in mind next time I buy a knife to use when moonlighting as a mercenary soldier dodging .30 caliber bullets. WTH...?

A choil is a good place for hang ups. Just my personal opinion.

A choil does not give you a longer cutting edge, just a notch that can be hung up on
in some uses. Also as noted above could be a weak point in the structure that does
not necessarily need a 30 cal incident to fail, but if properly rounded should be ok.
They do look nice though.
Again, just my 2 cents.

Agree. I don't care for it. But if a nice knife has one I wouldn't pass up buying just because it did.

I love when people don't have a clue what they are talking about so have to resort to comments like yours. Probably a good 90% of the designs in knives you use, have been developed from things you don't and or won't ever do. But you still get to benefit from it. But please keep on truckin, I am laughing.

Never had a single problem with a 'hang up'. But then, I didn't fall off the fugging turnip truck yesterday. The guys with hang ups, I'd bet are the same guys that can't walk and chew gum at the same time.

I love when know-it-alls talk about why their way is the ONLY way ( and saying it's so, because a 'maker' says so), and then resort to commenting on a thread that they'd be better served just STFU. But, I've never been accused of being able to keep MY mouth shut, either......

As could just as easily be switched to say the same thing for guys that can't sharpen a knife that doesn't have a choil.
