The final drive on the combine is leaking oil. Wait for parts, used, and it is not going to be cheap.

Back when I was a kid, Wendell and Harvey (brothers) farmed together. I may have the roles reversed, but the story remains the same. Harvey was picking corn. A Vise-Grip was being used to hold some vital pieces together. Harvey went to adjust things and the V-G sprung loose, smacking him in the mouth. To even the score, he, just as Wendell was arriving on the scene, hurled the offending tool off into the field. Harvey realized, just as Wendell was explaining it him, that things could not continue without the V-G. We leave our intrepid duo, on their hands and knees in the general direction of Harvey's throw.

I hear ya, Richard.

Front wheel bearing issue cost me a week's downtime, and $600.

Got that fixed Saturday and was moving it to my next project and the issue came back. The two housings are misfit from the factory and the retaining bolts cause the housings to gall. Totally a bad factory issue.

Going to Case tomorrow. Although it has 2 years, 2000 hours factory warranty, I'm past the time, but only have 1100 hours on it. Hoping they will step up and fix it. The cost will be in excess of $2500.

That breakdown was $2,500, used parts, plus labor.

Damn.

My breakdown is at about $4700 as of now... Plus time lost. Probably be in the shop another week or so. If I'm lucky, and it's not gonna be longer than that.

Actually filing suit on CNH for that defect.

Guy that used to feed bulls for me had replaced all the knives in one of his choppers. He or his dad had left a good sized hammer sitting on the top of the chopper and the door to the knife box was left open when they fired it up to check everything out.

The hammer vibrated over and fell into the knife box. Ruined the brand new set of knives they had just bought and installed. A set of knives was in excess of $10,000. So that repair was over $20k.

The front drive line on the JD 4450 needs to be replaced(worn splines). Called JD to get a new one.

$400, sweet.

Call back, sorry that is no longer available and the update kit is $2500.

I guess we should be calling a salvage yard.

Anyone want a finders fee?

Richard, I should have said drive-line coupler. The shaft itself is fine as are the u-joints.

We also need the stub shaft that comes out of the drive-box.

Let me know what you find........grin

I wholeheartedly agree. Early in farming career, I owned 2 MF combines, Massey-Ferguson, not the other MF word, although I called them that and worse on occasion. A man can easily lose his religion working on a combine, and I did.....more than once. After I sold the last one, which was actually a decent machine, I decided it was better on my health and being to just hire it done.

After operation an old JD combine some, and opening them up and greasing, etc., I was always amazed that the damn things would ever work at all, given all the moving parts.

Exactly. Lots and lots of bearings, grease fittings, shafts, and parts just waiting for a chance to go bad. Had a bearing go down on the elevator once, and the hot parts were dropping out behind the combine, setting the field on fire.
