when I installed my ARB and 5.38 gears, I just punched the carrier holes out carefully on my drill press. I was pi$$ed because both the gears and carrier were part of a kit, but needed modified to bolt together. in the end, it was an easy mod and everything is working well.

the kit was the Dynatrac Trail Leader package which included an assembled Pro Rock 44 front axle and axle shafts, locker, gears, and install kit for the rear. it was a bit of work but I don't regret it.

What I did when I was told none of the machine shops would open up the holes, was to leave the factory clutch pack in place, it was in good condition, and just went with the front unit. E

I wouldn't have had a problem doing that if mine had a limited slip from the factory. Mine is a "base" model and they wouldn't let me add it when I ordered mine. They said I would have to step up to the next package before I could add a rear limited slip so for me drilling was my best option.

The '71 is my old school crawler, the '12 will be used for the more gentleman runs, or when I don't want to ruff it as much.

I guess I'll see what this jeep thing is about. This late 70s with a 304 amc is following me home tomorrow. Very little or no visible rust on it, so hopefully will be solid.

RIO7, Great looking rig you have there. I just my oldie unloaded and parked in garage. Its been sitting for 8 years outside and needs some attention I am sure. Kind of making up a list of stuff I think I should do. I am not a mechanic and really don't know much at all about jeeps. So here are the list of things I think I should do. If anyone has ideas, please add them.

1. Check brakes
2. Replace front and rear diff fluids
3. Replace tranny fluid
4. Flush radiator
5 .Change oil
6. Replace all belts
7. New spark plugs? Not sure on this one, it seems to start and run fine.

Any ideas from anyone on best way to clean engine compartment without messing up any electronics?

Thinking my best bet is just taking it to a reputable jeep place in Denver area. I did hit one of the fenders with a little rubbing compound and there is some good paint under that weathered finish. Going to make a fine hunting rig.

replace all the rubber under the hood, not just the belt. Rad and heater hoses, too. Dump a little diesel on the motor, let set awhile, and pressure wash the piss outta it. Do it to a cool engine, and keep the spray away from the alternator and dist cap, best you can. Let it dry out for a day before starting it and there will be no probs with electronics

I had a 79 CJ7 with 304/Turbo 400/Quadra Trac and it was a strong running Jeep. I put a locker in the rear and it went great.
