Can't believe it a 76 year old rifle still getting the job done! This is a russian 9130 with sporterized bolt, archangel stock and a true russian sniper scope. Im not sure the story on it due to the writing being in russian, but its a 3-9x42 and as clear and crisp as a leupold. Custom home reloads of H4895 and PPU 180gr soft points. Shot was 50-55 yards with complete destruction on the inside.

My nephew did the shooting as it was his hunt. He was pumped and just wanted meat for the winter.

Good lookin' groceries. That cartridge doesn't get the respect it deserves, but it is certainly very capable.

Congrats to the young man!

Boy, that 7.62x54 blew a hole out of that buck!

Very cool.... That's a pretty good cartridge IMHO. Looks like your nephew approves, too. I've got an unmodified (except for an adjustable front sight) 91/30 Mosin that I'd like to put to use like that someday. The 7.62x54R is also a good candidate for handloading. Have a load with a .311" Sierra 150 gr. Pro-Hunter and RL-15 that runs just a hair under 2900 FPS and is about as accurate as I can get iron sights to go at 100 yds. Would love to try it out on a rifle zone whitetail someday but it'll have to wait its turn. Got two other rifles in line ahead of it for the same job.

well, we got one more hunt on the 28th and my friend will be using my short barreled M44 mosin nagant with a 150gr PPU and H4895. We'll see how he does. Damn deer are scare this year and small ones at that.

My friend borrowed my M44 mosin and with a 150gr PPU he got his buck at 132 yards. I will upload pictures of that one later. These old rifles shoot damn good once you find the right powder they like.

I have seen a lot of game taken with Mosin Nagants.
The problem is the bullets. The guys I know use Sierra .311 dia. 180 gr. SPT Pro-Hunter 2310 bullets.
Those have great accuracy and stopping power, but they are flat base, and do not reach way out there like a boat tail bullet.

My friend Robert took this whitetail buck in northern new mexico. We ran right onto them and by the time Rob got set up, they spooked and took off. As I walked back to the truck to grab my GPS, I saw their tails go waving through the trees and I told Rob that we can circle around and cut them off in the next valley.

We got ready, put on a slow stalk and sure enough, we come around a slight bend and I see 3 whitetail does feeding, another doe looking directly at us ( they can see through trees, i swear!) and low and behold... A legal buck feeding by himself 30-40 yards away from the does!

I first tried to get Rob set up of the bipod, it was to short, I laid down, put the bipod on my back, still to short. We looked for another plan, and during that time, the buck feed a little closer and offered a better shot angle.

Nothing to shoot off of, just stunted cedar trees, so I told Rob, screw it, throw it up on my shoulder but don't shoot until i plug my ears!

That mosin has the 20" barrel, so when it was on my shoulder, I was maybe 10-11 inches away from the muzzle. Had we been shooting the russian ammo, I would have gone home with no eye brows and a singed beard lol.

I ranged him at 132 yards and he was slowly walking at a 1/4ing away angle. I told Rob to aim at the last rib, he did so and squeezed the trigger and the buck dropped. While gutting, only the heart was complete. The lungs and liver came out in thick red/black jello.
