I have a LH Remington Model 700 in 8 X 57 JS . This is a factory build, not an aftermarket re-barrel/re-chamber. It has a grey/yellow laminate stock, no fixed sights. I remember reading in "Rifle" magazine back in around 1991-92, that a distributor (William Hicks Inc.) offered a line of LH Remington Model 700s in various metric calibers. Does anyone own a similar rifle or can confirm the magazine article mentioned?. TIA, Gary

AFAIK, the only European metric cartridges that Remington has cataloged for sale in the U.S. have been the 6.5x55, 7x57, 7x64, and 8x57. The 6.5x55, 7x57, and 8x57 were one year runs of the 700 Classic and I think the 7x64 Brenneke was offered in the 700 BDL.

Remington use to offer rifles chambered in classic, 'wildcat', or moribund rounds in their 'Classic' series.

You probably have an 8x57 IS which is the CIP designation for what we call an 8mm Mauser (aka 8x57 Mauser aka 7.92x57 Mauser). That round was offered in 2004.

Here is a table showing the cartridges offered in that line:

Thanks to both 260Remguy and GeorgeS,
I was unaware that the Model 700 Classic line included European metric calibers. I'll see if I can get any further information from either Remington Arms Co. or Remington Arms Collectors Society, but I'm very satisfied with the way it shoots and at the end of the day, that's what really matters.
Regards,
Gary

But the Classic was never offered in LH (or I would have bought a number of them when they were issued.)

Your rifle, if it is a factory installed barrel, is some kind of a special run.

Well, there is that small detail. grin

Perhaps a rebarrel with a Remington take-off.

OP,
Can you post a photo of the rollmarks and carrtidge stamp on your barrel?

George

GeorgeS,
I'll see if I can post photos this weekend as I'm on the road currently.
Thanks again,

Sounds like a sweet gun, I would be all over one like that if one ever showed up around here. The 8x57 is seriously underrated, looking forward to the pictures............
